Edward James Gillen, age 68, formerly of Savanna, IL, passed away at his daughter's home on July 8, 2022 in Benton, WI, surrounded by family. A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, August 13, 2022 at 11am St John's Cemetery in Savanna.
Ed was born May 1, 1954, in Savanna, IL, the son of Frank and Angelita (Hernandez) Gillen. He attended Savanna schools. He first went to work for the city of Savanna, then ultimately for Wood Brothers, of Oregon, IL, until his retirement. He was a hard working man who was beloved by many in Savanna.
In his free time, Ed enjoyed drawing, fishing (especially ice fishing), peaceful walks, working in the yard, car rides while listening to oldies radio stations, and watching old western movies. But it was his grandchildren, who brought Ed the most joy in life. He spent countless hours taking them to the park, playing games, and telling stories. They brought him true joy and he was so very proud of each of them.
Ed will be dearly missed by his children, Marshal Gillen, Dori Pate, Angela Gillen, Kindrea Chavez, Kindsey Chavez, and Kyle Chavez; three brothers, Frank Gillen, Arthur Gillen, and John Gillen; five sisters, Rose Reiff, Victoria Darrah, Jone Shearer, JoAnn (Bruce) Ward, and Rita (Greg) Mitchell; 13 grandchildren, Kelsey Cottingham, Kaylee Cottingham, Tyler Cottingham, Kenden Beau, Aiden Beau, Patience Boyle, Payten Chavez, Lindzey Lopez, Nico Magana, Viktor Magana, Andraya Magana, Chance Schnitzler, Jayda Vasquez. Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Angelita; two brothers, Joseph Gillen and Michael Gillen; and grandson, Kaden Schnitzler.
