Edward Hegarty Obituary

Published by Cavanagh Family Funeral Home -Norwood on Jun. 14, 2019.
Edward James Hegarty, 59 of Philadelphia passed away Friday, June 14, 2019 at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse. He was born May 7, 1960 to the late Edward John & Dolores Emma (Heron) Hegarty. Ed was born in Philadelphia and spent most of his life in Norwood with family and friends. He graduated from St. James High School and went on to receive his bachelors degree from West Chester University. Ed most recently worked for Pentec Health, which became a part of his extended family. He also enjoyed his time volunteering, especially at the Discovery House. Ed loved taking trips down the shore and relaxing on the beach. He returned to South Philly last year to enjoy the city he loved. Ed was an avid Eagles fan and was proud to see his team win Super Bowl LII. He was privileged to travel to see them play their 2018-2019 playoff run, from Washington to New Orleans. Ed was devoted to his family and the people he cared about most, especially his daughter. Ed was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and fought with strength and perseverance. He passed away comfortably and peacefully, surrounded by love. He will be dearly missed. Ed is survived by his daughter, Megan Hegarty (David Southern); siblings: Coleen Newman, Deborah Reilly and Francis Hegarty (Tia); seven nieces & nephews and eight great-nieces & nephews; and many other close family and friends. Family and friends are invited to Ed's Memorial Service on Friday June 21st from 4 – 6 PM at the Cavanagh Family Funeral Home, 301 Chester Pike, Norwood, PA 19074. A Prayer Service will immediately follow at 6 PM. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Discovery Ministries (PO Box 76 Haddonfield, NJ 08033). http://Discoveryministriesinc.org

To the family of Ed, Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of Ed. We were friends from the "Alley Gang". He was a great person and always had a good attitude. We lost touch, as I moved to Ohio, but was thrilled when he moved in next to my parents house in Norwood. We visited a few times when I came home to visit. He was the same great guy that made you laugh as he was as a teen. He loved his daughter and his family. The world lost a genuine, wonderful soul. Joanne Pullin Curran

To family of Ed Hegarty,

I am truly sorry for your loss, Ed was such great person and friend, he would have me laughing every day at Pentec Health, we would battle over the Eagles and Dallas games. I am truly going to miss his spunk, his smile and laugh, He was my mentor at work and I appreciated his kindness when I lost my mother. May Ed rest in peace and rejoice with his mother and mine. God bless you all.

Ed and I retired on the very same day from Pentec Health in December, 2018. That day, Ed gave such a heartfelt speech. I remember him standing up with microphone in hand, expressing his love, and appreciation for fellow co-workers he called friends. He made me laugh that day when he told me the titanium in his hip joints could set off airport security. Ed had a sense of humor, and some jokes too. But unforgettably on that day, Ed shed some tears, and gave lots and lots of hugs. After wiping away his tears, he gave us the most beautiful never-ending smiles. I'll never forget his smile.
Prayers and condolences go out to Ed's family, loved ones, and many friends. And to his dear daughter Megan, may comfort, sympathy, and much love surround you, and keep you during this difficult time.

What a valiant fight he fought, taken too soon. I am sorry for your loss Megan, Colleen, Debbie & Franny. Eddie was a character and always made me laugh. He was one of the good guys and will be missed. May he R.I.P. and enjoy his heavenly life with your mom.
