Edward Hoonhorst Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 29, 2024.
Edward Frederick Hoonhorst, known fondly to all as "Big Ed", passed away peacefully on March 5, 2024, at the age of 86. Born on October 20, 1937, in Grand Rapids, MI, Ed's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, hard work, and dedication to family.
A proud veteran, Ed served his country after the Korean conflict (1955 - 1959), a period that shaped much of his character and instilled in him values that he carried throughout his life. After his service, he returned to Michigan and channeled his formidable work ethic into building a successful construction and concrete business. His craftsmanship and attention to detail were not just evident in the structures he built but also in the strong foundation he laid for his family.
Ed's heart was ever at home in Hudsonville/Zeeland, MI, where he and his beloved wife, JoAnn Hoonhorst (née Veldheer), built a life filled with joy and purpose. Together, they raised five wonderful children: Edward, Nancy, Thomas (Kathy), Michael (Patricia), and Mark (Lynn). Ed's legacy continued to blossom with the addition of nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life.
Ed was proceeded in death by his parents, Henry and Frieda (Wendell) Hoonhorst; siblings, Rich, Wendel, Dave, Harold, Bob, Don and Margaret. He is survived by his brother, Fred Hoonhorst.
A man of deep faith, Ed was an inspiration to all who knew him, embodying the principles of love and service. His friends and family will remember him for his captivating storytelling and his ability to reminisce with a warmth that drew people in. His tales were often punctuated by laughter and the wisdom of experience, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to hear them.
Ed's hands were skilled and tireless, always ready to fix a problem or create something beautiful. His handiness was a trait that made him a go-to person in times of need, and his loving nature ensured that he was always willing to lend a hand.
Above all, Ed Hoonhorst will be remembered as a faith-filled, loving, and handy man-a pillar in his community, a cherished friend, and the heart of his family. His memory will be carried forward in the lives of those he touched and through the enduring bonds of family that he held so dear.
Ed's life will be celebrated with a service that honors his rich legacy. Any friends and family are invited to join a celebration of life ceremony with military honors at Pine Grove Community Church, in their Family Life Center building, on Saturday, April 20th at 11:00am. There will be a luncheon after the service.
The Hoonhorst family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this time of remembrance. Ed's spirit lives on in the laughter of his grandchildren, the stories shared among friends, and the quiet moments of reflection on a life well-lived.
