Edward Grey Joyner Jr.

Edward Grey Joyner, Jr., 99, of Salisbury, passed away February 8, 2024, at Compass Healthcare.

Edward was born in Greenville, NC on March 2, 1924, to Edward Grey Joyner, Sr. and Susan Gay Joyner. He grew up in Wilson, N.C. He was an Eagle Scout.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corp serving during WWII and was assigned to the 8th Army 95 Bomber Squadron Group. He was a radio gunner on a B17 which flew over Germany and after the war flew food and other supplies over Holland.

After the war he returned to UNC at Chapel Hill where he was an ATO and editor of the Daily Tarheel. While at UNC he was inducted into the Order of the Grail, an honorary service fraternity and Golden Fleece, an honor Society.

After obtaining a degree in Journalism he worked for United Press in Raleigh, Richmond and New York City. Afterwards he went into Public Relations and was PR director for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel; moved to Charleston and was PR director for five southern states until his retirement. After retiring he moved to Wilson to care for his mother and father. In 1985 he married Blair Alston Joyner who preceded him in death in 2023.

He and Blair lived in Salisbury, NC where he was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and served as an usher and led Evening Prayer. He was a volunteer with Rowan Helping Ministries and a Master Gardener.

He leaves to cherish his memory, daughters: Rev. Sally Joyner Giffin (John) of Thurmont, MD and Holly Joyner Mathews (Jim) of Avon, CT; also David Winston Joyner of Salisbury, Edward William Joyner of Morehead City, Blair Elizabeth (Bliss) Rendle (James) of Bismark, ND, eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Inurnment will be at St. Lukes Episcopal Church Columbarium at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 131 W. Council St., Salisbury, NC 28144.
