Edward Richard Kubow

1922 - 2022

Edward Richard Kubow, beloved by his family, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 24, 2022, in Escondido, California. He was born on November 10, 1922, in Seattle, Washington. With his dad in the Navy, Ed grew up "on the coast," mostly in California, but also lived several years as a child in the Philippines and China. He played football for Narbonne High School in Lomita, CA.



Ed joined the Marine Corps in 1941. He was honorably discharged in 1947, then rejoined in 1952. He served for over 30 years, retiring in 1977. He served in both World War II and the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Sergeant Major. He was particularly proud of being a parachute jumper and jumpmaster. Among his numerous awards and decorations were the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat **V** and gold star, Navy Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal (10th award).



Ed first met his wife when she was the 10-year-old kid sister of one of his high school friends. Seven years later, after the war, when he returned to visit his friend, she'd grown up! He married Jerrilee Mince in 1948 in Lomita, California. Together, they raised two children, Le'Ellen and Thomas and were happily married for over 74 years. They moved over a dozen times during his time in the Marine Corps, living in numerous places in the United States, from as far east as Virginia and as far west as Hawaii. Included were three separate year-long separations while he was deployed overseas, including two tours in Vietnam. He retired in San Diego, California. After retirement, he took a position at National University, counseling prospective and active students, continuing his own education and eventually becoming the Dean of Students. During that time, he also earned his MBA.



Ed was not only a decorated Marine, and well-known and respected at the university, but he was also a devoted father. He coached Little League, supported school events and volunteered at church. Family traditions were important, especially birthdays and holidays.



He enjoyed playing racquetball, and in retirement recalled his love of carpentry to create things Jerri needed such as a potting table and quilting frame, and small fun items like simple puzzles, and wooden quilt squares. Later in retirement, Ed sketched drawings for his grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's baby quilts, watched football games on TV, and worked on various projects at home.



Blessed by his presence in their lives, Ed is missed by his wife, Jerri, children Le' and Tom and Tom's children and grandchildren.



A celebration of Ed's life will be held at the Mira Mesa Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 3, 2022, followed by interment at the Miramar National Cemetery.



In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mira Mesa Presbyterian Church.
