CUMBERLAND
Edward Adam Malin, 69, of Cumberland passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025 at his home. His family would like to congratulate his enemies for outliving him.
He was the husband of Kathleen (Costello) Malin. He also leaves his children, Rocky and Richard Alexander Malin; his brother Joe Malin; his brother Bill Malin and his wife Sharon Smith; his in-laws Patti Costello and Willie Eisele, Mike Costello and Gladys Medina-Costello; as well as his friends Thomas and Michelle White; and his dog Duke.
Born in Washington D.C., he was the son of the late Morton and Edyth (Lasky) Malin. He spent his childhood in Bethesda, Maryland and Strafford, Pennsylvania; and then lived in Westchester County, New York before settling in a log cabin in
Cumberland, Rhode Island for the past 26 years.
Ed was a computer programmer, specializing in medical database technology. He also worked on the computer animation technology used in the movie Tron. Places he worked included TV Guide, MAGi/SynthaVision, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, InterSystems and with his consulting company Ed Malin and Associates he worked with Polylogics, Loma Linda Medical Center, UC Davis Medical Center, and Veteran Affairs Medical Centers throughout the country. He also served on the ANSI graphics standards committee and was the publisher of The MUMPS Times industry publication.
His greatest passion however was cooking. An often curmudgeonly and irascible man, the way he found joy was in feeding people. He made hundreds of memorable meals for his family and friends. He took a break from his programming career to become the proprietor of a restaurant, Seafood Express in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He loved to teach his son Alex to cook, inspiring him to be a professional chef as well.
Ed collected and restored Shopsmith woodworking machines, filling his basement with more of them than he could count. He also loved fishing, Pepsi, crossword puzzles, his Celica and Mustang convertibles, professional wrestling, and arguing with people on internet forums. He loved having many pets, in particular Blackjack, an actual junkyard dog. In his spare time he studied aeronautics and rocket engines so that someday he could declare that he was in fact a rocket scientist.
We would like to invite anyone who would like to honor his life or celebrate his passing to join us on Saturday, July 12, 2025 with Visiting Hours from 10 AM to 12 NOON. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Tech10 Technology Scholarship at Rhode Island Foundation, One Union Station, Providence, RI 02903 rifoundation.org/tech10
