Edward William Mapstone, age 81, of Liverpool, passed away peacefully on February 27th at the VA Medical Center after a courageous fight with cancer. Edward was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He was born on April 15th, 1944, to Madeleine Y. (Pierce) Mapstone and Shirley B. Mapstone. A lifelong Syracuse area resident, Edward attended Vocational High School before proudly serving our country in the United States Air Force. He went on to obtain his associate’s degree in accounting from The College of St. Rose in Albany, NY. Edward was the assistant manager of the Syracuse Chiefs (now Syracuse Mets) for 22 years. He later worked at New Process Gear and retired in 2006.
Edward was affectionately known by many nicknames, including Ed, Eddie, Big Ed, Mapper, and Grumpy. He loved going to Finger Lakes to bet on the horses, pull tabs, fishing, baseball (Go Blue Jays!), and having a beer with his many friends at the Cicero American Legion and Bridgeport VFW. As a younger man, he loved to golf and bowl. He competed in several televised bowling tournaments.
His family meant everything to him. He was married to his wife, Sharon (Hiscock) Mapstone, for 60 years. Together they had two children: Michelle Marie (Mapstone) Haab and Edward Thomas Mapstone. He was fiercely proud of his children and grandchildren and supported them in all their endeavors through the years. Known for his quick wit and charm, Edward was a force of nature. He could be stubborn but always open-minded. While he could appear gruff on the outside, he had a generous heart and loved his family unconditionally.
Edward is predeceased by his parents, Madeleine Yvonne (Pierce) Mapstone and Shirely Brown Mapstone, and his sister Virginia (Douglas) Ireland.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ann (Hiscock) Mapstone; brother, David (Nancy) Mapstone, daughter Michelle Marie Haab, son Edward Thomas Mapstone, granddaughter Haley Christina (Brenden) Kruger, grandsons Colin Edward Haab and Daniel Connor Mapstone, great-grandson Lucan William Kruger, daughter-in-law Michelle (Bronner) Mapstone, son-in-law Galen Haab, several nieces and nephews, his forever friend Franklin Sharp and his many other friends.
