Edward de Saunhac Matthews, a retired physician, on June 27, 2007 at Ochsner Hospital. He ws 93 years of age. He was born in New Orleans and was a life-long resident of the city. He graduated from New Orleans Academy and then from Tulane University with a B.S. in 1933 and an M.D. in 1936. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and Nu Sigma Nu Medical Fraternity. He interned for one year at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and was a resident for two years on the Osler Medical Service of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He practiced Internal Medicine in New Orleans from 1940 to 1980 and was on the staffs of Hotel Dieu and Touro Hospitals. He then retired from private practice and was employed by the local V.A. Hospital until 1993. He was a member of the part-time faculty of the Tulane Medical School for 45 years and was appointed Professor of Clinical Medicine in 1960. In World War II he served with Tulane�s U.S. 24th General Hospital for one year at Fort Benning, GA, 9 months in Bizerte, Tunisia and 13 months in Italy and then 6 months with other hospitals in the Philippines. He was discharged with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He was a Board Certified Internist, a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of several other professional organizations. His honors included Phi Beta Kappa, A.O.A. Honorary Medical Society , the Isadore Dyer Medal for the highest 4 year scholastic average in his class at Tulane Medical School, and the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians. He was a member of The Louisiana Club and of The Boston Club. He was preceded in death by his wife Martha McDonough Matthews, his parents Amelie Claiborne and Martin Levering Matthews, Sr., by his brother Martin Levering Matthews, Jr. and by his sister Elizabeth Matthews (Mrs. Ralph) Hopkins. Survivors include his daughter Lise Claiborne Matthews of Venice, CA, his son Dr. Charles Claiborne Matthews of River Ridge, two nieces Mrs. Raymond P. (Joan) Starr and Mrs. Jack (Mimi) Davis, and five grandchildren: James Joseph McNamara, Michael Teo Van Runkle, Andrew C. Matthews, James L. Matthews, and Christine A. Matthews.
