Obituary
Dr. Edward Lee Mitchell, age 93, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 20, 2023, surrounded by his family.
He was born on March 14, 1930, in Greensboro, NC to William T. and Elsie M. (Perdue) Mitchell.
Dr. Mitchell, pastored Oehlhoff Methodist Church for 10 years while attending Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland. He also held a Bachelor of arts degree from Baldwin Wallace and a Bachelor of Theology from Cleveland Bible College, now Malone University, Canton. He served on the Malone Board for over thirty years.
The doctor and his wife, the former Ruth Alma Mosher of Cardington, Ohio and sons, moved to Humacao, Puerto Rico to serve as the chief of surgical services at Ryder Memorial Hospital in 1964.
The Mitchell family moved to Alliance, Ohio, in 1966, "Because it seemed like a medically harmonious community and allows us to raise our family in an area where our Friends churches are well known," and to be near Malone University.
His surgical practice in Alliance, Ohio spanned 28 years. He served Alliance through United Way, Alliance Community Medical Foundation, and The Alliance Pregnancy Center.
He also continued to teach and preach God's Word when given the opportunity. He temporarily filled the pulpit in many local churches. He loved Jesus Christ and people, and always was interested in their spiritual lives and eternal destinies.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 71 years, Ruth Alma Mitchell; sons, James E. (Barbara) Mitchell, David L. (Beth) Mitchell, Daniel R. (Rhonda) Mitchell; daughter, Janice L. (David) Sickle; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, sister Doris Miller, and lifetime family friend Ardis Drewyor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 siblings.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 25th from 5:00-8:00pm at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 26th at the Alliance Friends Church at 11:00am with Dr. Mitchell's nephew, Paul Johnson officiating. A visitation will also be held one hour before the service on Friday at the church.
