Robert Mitchell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Moore, Snear & Ruggiero Funeral Home - East Norriton on Mar. 13, 2026.
Obituary of Robert Edgar Mitchell

Robert Edgar Mitchell, age 96 of Center Square, Montgomery County Pennsylvania departed this world on the afternoon of March 8th, 2026 surrounded by loving members of his family.

Robert was born November 28,1929 in Hahnemann Hospital in Philadelphia Pa. to parents Edgar J. Mitchell and Mildred Mitchell (Hamilton).

He spent his childhood and young adulthood growing up in the Allegheny West section of North Philadelphia and in the West Oak Lane Section. In these neighborhoods as a boy, he played stickball, buck buck, kick the can and rode on homemade go carts made of old orange crates.

He graduated from Germantown High School in 1948. As a young man he worked a series of jobs including taxi driver, driving for Coca Cola, construction laborer etc. He had an almost encyclopedic knowledge of Philadelphia streets.

He enlisted in and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard, serving during the Korean War. Using G.I. Bill, he attended and graduated from West Chester Teachers College in 1958.

After graduation he worked for a few years as a public-school biology teacher.

He also earned a master's degree from the University of Michigan and later went on to work as a health inspector of hospitals and nursing homes and later a supervisor with the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

He loved watching old movies, listening to classical and jazz music, reading, planting trees, do-it -yourself home improvement projects and going to his second home in Brigantine, New Jersey.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Joan (nee Manhart) and his brother Richard (Dick) Mitchell.

Remaining to cherish Robert's memory are his children Emily, Leslie, Andrew, Mildred & Matthew, grandchildren Kacia, Olivia, Tinesha and Alexis and great grandchildren Thomas, Lucy, Ryan, Ember & Jason.

He is also survived by his loving dog Sadie.

His Graveside Service and Interment will take place on Tuesday March 17, 2026 at 1:00 PM in Washington Crossing National Cemetery, Newtown, PA.
