It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, devoted father and cherished friend, Edward “Shawn” Mitchell. Shawn passed unexpectedly at Annie Penn Hospital on July 12, 2025.
Shawn was born on March 9, 1979 to the late Tammy Mitchell at Duke University Hospital. He lived in Roanoke Rapids, NC in the beginning of his life and later moved to Rockingham County, NC at the age of 17.
Shawn married the love of his life, Avery, on May 9, 2009 at Smyrna Presbyterian Church. Together they blended their families and built a home filled with laughter, love and unity. Shawn’s greatest joy in life, besides his wife, was his children. His oldest son, Edward Shawn Mitchell Jr., was born in 2002 and instantly became his forever sidekick. He proudly gained two sons when he married, Hunter R. McCoy and Henry Alexander McCoy, whom he raised as his own. Shawn’s family was complete in 2013 when his baby girl, Emily Shae Mitchell, was born. He made sure she was a daddy’s girl and spent every possible moment by her side. Shawn made sure to pass along his love for video games, New York Giants football and Duke basketball to his children.
Among the many people who were dear to him, one stood beside him not just as a friend, but as a brother in every way that mattered, Michael Dale Kennon. They were friends for over 25 years, sharing an unbreakable bond rooted in trust and unwavering loyalty.
A memorial service will be held at Wilkerson Funeral Home on Saturday, July 19th at 4:00 pm. The family will begin welcoming loved ones and friends one hour prior to the service.
