Edward J. Murphy

HOLYOKE Edward J. Murphy, 89, of Holyoke, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2016 at Holyoke Medical Center. Edward was born in Holyoke, son of the late John and MaryAnn (McKaig) Murphy. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School, received a BA in Education from Elms College in 1961, and a Masters Degree in Education from Elms College in 1966. Ed was a teacher at Holyoke High School for many years, retiring in 1988. He served in the United States Navy, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus #90 and the Holyoke Lodge of Elks #902. Ed was a communicant of Our Lady of the Cross, formerly Holy Cross, and was very involved in the Parish for many years. Edward was predeceased by his wife, Marie J. (Mackey) Murphy in 2007. He is survived by a son, Edward J. "Ned" Murphy and his wife Tess of Potsdam, NY; four daughters: Maureen Wolfe of Holyoke, MaryAnn Dunn and her husband Jamie of Holyoke, Barbara Haverty and her husband Milt of Walnut Creek, CA, and Joanne Michonski and her husband Gary of Westfield; eight grandchildren: Katie Disanto, Jamie Dunn, Sean Dunn, Megan Lajewski, Kristen Michonski, Nicole Argiro, Kelly Michonski, and Michael Michonski; eight great-grandchildren: Rachel, Nora, Lila, Brayden, Dominic, Nolan, JJ, and Damen; a sister, Sr. Mary Ellen Murphy, SSJ of Framingham; and many nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by three brothers, Stephen, John, and James Murphy, and a sister, Catherine "Kay" Murphy. The funeral will be held Thursday at 9:00am from the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton St. Holyoke, MA 01040 followed by Mass in Our Lady of the Cross Church at 10:00am. Burial will be held in St. Jerome Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00pm.
