Edward J. Rafferty, of Levittown, died Sunday, July 30, 2023, at Vitas Hospice in Nazareth Hospital after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
Born in Philadelphia, and formerly of Oakford, PA, Mr. Rafferty had been a long-time resident of Falls Township.
A 1962 graduate of Bishop Egan High School, he went on to obtain his Bachelors of Arts degree from Temple University.
Ed spent most of his working career as a social worker employed with the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging for 29 years until his retirement in 2005. He also served as a shop steward for the Pennsylvania Social Services Union.
Mr. Rafferty was a longtime member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Fairless Hills and enjoyed singing in the church choir.
A loving father who was dedicated to his family, Ed was also a man of many interests including reading, history, politics, geography, and astronomy. He was a member of the National Parks Association, supporter of the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA, where he would often visit, and was a Christian Brother prior to his marriage.
Son of the late Edward F. and Marie Wangstrom Rafferty, he is survived by his wife of 53 years, Phyllis J. Hoover Rafferty, four children; Karen J. Leyden (Frederick), Edward K. Rafferty (Danielle), Elaine M. Rafferty, Erik S. Rafferty (Kristin), five grandchildren; Ella, Claire, Edward A., Benjamin, and Theo Rafferty.
Ed will also be sadly missed by his brothers Patrick Rafferty (Sylvia), Kenneth (Connie), Bernard (Veronica), his sister Helen Reed (Frank), and several nieces, nephews and extended family members, and friends.
His funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 11:00 AM at the St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 325 S. Oxford Valley Road in Fairless Hills. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Grace Cemetery in Langhorne, PA. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects Tuesday, August 8, 2023 from 9:30 AM until time of his funeral mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Rafferty's name can be made to St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, or to the Bucks County Opportunity Council at www.bcoc.org
