Edward Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rebello Funeral Home & Crematory on Jan. 27, 2026.
Attleboro- Edward G. Smith, 84, fondly known as Ed by his friends and family, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 26, 2026, at Our Lady of Fatima Hospital in North Providence. Born on October 9, 1941, in Attleboro, MA, Ed was a man whose life was characterized by dedication, hard work, and an unwavering love for his family and country.

Ed was the beloved husband of Evelyn C. (Gardner) Smith, with whom he shared over 38 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. He was the cherished son of the late Elwood and Esther (Chase) Smith, and a caring brother to Shirley Cole of East Providence. Ed's legacy as a devoted father is carried on by his daughter Melissa Burgess and her husband Earl Ellis of Attleboro, and he was predeceased by his son, Edward E. Smith. As a stepfather, Ed showed equal measures of love and guidance to Rick Harris, Russell Harris, and he held fond memories of his late stepsons, Michael Harris , and David Harris.

Ed's role as a grandfather was one of his greatest joys. He doted on his grandchildren, Ashley Jackson and Justin Garcia, and was overjoyed to be a great-grandfather to Janiyah and Joshua. His large, blended family also included five step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved dearly.

For over 42 years, Ed served the community through his work with the Seekonk Water District as a general laborer. His commitment to excellence continued after retirement when he became a self-employed inspector for several other water districts. His expertise and dedication to ensuring the safety and reliability of water services were unparalleled.

Ed's life outside of work was rich and full. A proud veteran of the US Army, he carried the values of service and patriotism throughout his life. He was an active member of the American Legion and a former member of Jesse's Roamers Motorcycle Club. His interests were as vast as the open road he loved to travel. An avid gardener, Ed found peace and fulfillment in the simple pleasure of nurturing plants and watching them grow. His love for being outdoors was matched only by his skill in creating beautiful spaces.

Those who knew Ed would describe him as loving, kind, and handy-a man who could fix just about anything and would readily lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He took great pride in his American heritage and his service to his country, embodying the spirit of a true patriot.

Ed's life was a testament to the values he held dear-family, service, and community. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. As we bid farewell to Edward G. Smith, we celebrate a life well-lived and honor the enduring impact he has left on the hearts of his loved ones and the community he served with such distinction.

His family will receive guests on Saturday, January 31,2026 from 10:30am -11:00am in the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence. Military Honors will be performed at 11:00am at the funeral home, burial will follow in Seekonk Cemetery, Newman Avenue, Seekonk.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

I´m so sorry you are no longer a physical presence with us, but I know your spirit will be around to keep the gathering alive.
May your loved ones who have passed before you be waiting for you at the gates of heaven! They may not have a beer in hand but I´ve read the wine is plentiful!
Rest in peace Uncle Eddy, love Linda
