Edward Dale "Ed" Winter

View Funeral Webcast Edward "Ed" Dale Winter, 70, of Hiawatha, Kansas, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on July 18th, 2025. He was surrounded by his loved ones. Born on December 21st, 1954, in St. Joseph, Missouri, Ed was the son of the late Raymen and Mildred (Marshall) Winter. He grew up in the close-knit farming community of Brown County, Kansas, alongside his brothers, Mike and Alan. From an early age, Ed was active in 4-H, earning numerous ribbons and awards for showing horses and cattle, a passion that foreshadowed a lifelong love of animals and agriculture. A 1973 graduate of Hiawatha High School, Ed went on to attend Highland Community College where he earned an Associate of Science Degree. He then transferred to Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. His time at K-State nurtured a love for learning and solidified his pride in his alma mater-he remained a devoted Wildcat fan throughout his life. Following his graduation, Ed returned home to work on the family farm, where he raised purebred Angus cattle-a passion inspired by his uncle, Harry Ukena-and he took special care of donkeys too. He also inherited a green thumb from his mother, Mildred, developing a special interest in flowers, specifically orchids. Ed's commitment to land stewardship and conservation was reflected in his years of service on the Brown County Soil Conservation Board and Roy's Creek Watershed Board, where he held several leadership positions. His dedication to his community and the land he loved never went unnoticed. Outside of work, Ed cherished spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed attending K-State games with his longtime friend Tom Jones, proudly cheering on the Wildcats whenever he could. Ed is survived by his brothers, Alan (Gwen) Winter and Mike (Dee) Winter; nieces and nephews: Heather Pilcher (Brad Siebenmorgen), Holly (Ron) Gantt, Deborah (Jason) Taylor, Heidi Winter (Terry Noll), and David (Andi) Winter; as well as 12 great-nieces and nephews who brought him much joy and pride. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymen and Mildred Winter. Funeral Services will be held at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Hiawatha, Kansas on Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at 11 AM with visitation beginning an hour prior to the service. Pastor Shane Spangler will officiate. Interment will follow the ceremony at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery north of Leona, Kansas.
