Edwin Thomas Birckhead, a long-time resident of Albemarle County and Salem, Virginia, was welcomed into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was 90 years old.
Born on April 16, 1934, Edwin lived a life defined by faith, kindness, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. As the youngest of four siblings, he grew up cherishing the bonds of family and carried that commitment into every relationship throughout his life. His gentle demeanor, uplifting spirit, and quick wit made every moment spent with him special, while his steadfast presence and guidance shaped the lives of those around him. A devoted provider and constant source of support, Edwin was always present, embodying patience, warmth, and love. His legacy of kindness and compassion will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him.
Edwin retired from the United States Postal Service, where he served faithfully for many years, ending his career as a postmaster. Outside of work, he was an active member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, where he found community and strength in his faith.
He enjoyed the simple pleasures of life-tailgating and cheering on the University of Virginia's sports teams, savoring his love for chocolate, and celebrating the milestones of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In his later years, nothing brought him more happiness than supporting his family, attending their events, and showing his unwavering love and pride. One of his most treasured traditions was sharing weekly chocolate milkshakes with his son and great-grandson, creating cherished moments across three generations.
Edwin was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend of 58 years, Alice Yancey Birckhead, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and friendship, and his treasured grandson, Reed Birckhead.
He is survived by his children: Carolyn Breeden; Stan Birckhead and his wife, Susan; and Stuart Birckhead and his wife, Rosemary; along with their families. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. In his later years, Edwin found companionship with Nancy Adams, whose presence brightened his days.
Edwin Thomas Birckhead will be remembered as a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He embodied kindness and humility, and his gentle nature left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He lived a life of laughter, love, and faith, and his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
