He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 1933 to Claude and Sue De Vries. Eddie, as he preferred to be called, attended school in Detroit, Michigan through the 10 th grade. His father worked for the Detroit Public Schools and his mother owned a dress shop in Detroit.
Eddie proudly served in 2 branches of the United States Military. He spent 2 years in the Air Force, and 2 years in the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas as a Chaplain's Assistant. He returned to Detroit after completing his service.
After a short time selling Buick's, he went in to sales with the Michigan Consolidated Gas Company selling appliances. This led to a career in sales with Hardwick Stove Company that took his family to Indiana and later back to Texas as he moved into a management position.
Eddie began investing in real estate in Naples, Florida in 1977. In 1982 he decided to leave Hardwick and move to Naples on a permanent basis. He dabbled in real estate and other employment while caring for his parents in their final years. In 1992 after answering an ad for a promotional products sales position, he found a niche in the local automobile dealership supply market. This led to the formation of De Vries Specialties. He ran De Vries Specialties with operations in Florida and Texas through 2017, eventually retiring at 85 and turning over operations to his son, Calvin.
Eddie was married twice. His second wife, Lois, passed in January 2008. His oldest son, Kevin, passed in December 2020. He is survived by his youngest son, Calvin and his wife, Cheryl along with their three sons and four grandchildren from Kevin. He also had three step sons, Hal, John, and Ned, and one step daughter, Lisa, from his 20 years with Lois, along with many grandchildren on her side of the family.
A memorial service will be held January 17, 2026 at 11:00am at Covenant Church of Naples, 6926 Trail Blvd., Naples, FL 34108.
