Edwin Lee DeGroot

Edwin Lee DeGroot, 75, of Platte, SD, passed away at the Platte Hospital, after a hard fought battle with cancer with his children and grandchildren at his side, on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.

Born May 4, 1950, in Platte to Thomas and Gertie (Hiemstra) DeGroot, Edwin spent his childhood days working on his family farm and he enjoyed that. He would reminisce about in his younger years as a child going over and playing with the neighbor kids.

Edwin lived in Platte all of his life and attended Platte High School. After working on the family farm he then started driving truck for many years which he enjoyed. He was also a farm hand for local farmers for many years. Edwin married Charlene Teeslink on August 4, 1968.

Edwin loved his kids, grandkids, great grandchild, animals, and enjoyed to play cards with friends. He especially liked to play cards with his special friend, Dee Roth. They played many hands of cards together. He valued and cherished the many friends he had with the people he worked for.

A moment to look back on: Brenda, Shelly, and Briana took Ed to his cancer treatments and appointments which the girls enjoyed doing for him and they loved spending that time with him. During his last few hours, his face lit up, opened his eyes and smiled, when he got to see his great grandchild, Paisley Rae, for the last time. Right before he passed, there was another special moment when he opened his eyes, gave a little smirk to his boys and grandkids one last time while they were holding his hand.

Grateful for having shared in Edwin's life are his three children: Jeff DeGroot of Platte, SD, Brian (Shelly) DeGroot of Platte, SD, and Brenda Haugan of Pierre, SD; three grandchildren: Jackson (Caitlyn) DeGroot (grandson), Sawyer (Maddi) DeGroot (grandson), and Briana DeGroot (granddaughter), all of Platte; great grandchild: Paisley Rae DeGroot, daughter of Sawyer and Maddi DeGroot; five brothers: Rodney (Karen) DeGroot of Platte, SD, Donald (Stephanie) DeGroot of Rapid City, SD, Myron DeGroot of Platte, SD, Darwin (Mona) DeGroot of Platte, SD, and Craig DeGroot of Huron, SD; and one sister, Wanda Johnson of Platte, SD.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Gertie DeGroot; sister Donna Kuipers; and niece Lisa Johnson.

Memorial Services for Edwin DeGroot, age 75 of Platte, SD will be held on Monday, October 20 at 7 PM at Mount-Smith Funeral Home, Platte, SD. Visitation from 6-7 before the Memorial service.
