Edwin Toms Obituary

Published by Daily Progress from May 9 to May 11, 2008.

Edwin S. Toms

Edwin Smith Toms, 81, of Charlottesville, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, at home, surrounded by his loving daughters.

Born on September 7, 1926, in Heards, Virginia, he was the son of the late Howell Edwin Toms and Cora Mawyer Toms. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Agnes P. Toms; and a sister, Dorothy P. Toms.

Edwin is survived by two daughters, Peggy L. Toms of Faber, and Patsy "Bootie" D. Tome of Charlottesville; and two special "honorary" daughters, Diana Rockwell and Holly Olinger. Edwin is also survived by a sister, Opal Toms Cole of Waynesboro; and many other loved relatives and friends. His grand-dogs, Kai, Talley and Meek, will miss the special treats Ed enjoyed giving them

Edwin was a United States Navy veteran and a member of LSM/LSMR Navy Amphibious Association. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946, after traveling throughout the world during World War II.

He was a past President of the Life Underwriters Association and enjoyed his work as a private broker after retiring from Life of Virginia Co. with 35 years of nationally recognized service.

Edwin was a life and charter member of the Charlottes-ville/Albemarle Rescue Squad, a life member of the Falcon Club and a life member of the Charlottesville Elk Lodge #389. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he did volunteer work.

Edwin was an avid reader, had an impressive marble collection and enjoyed 40 years of ushering UVA football and basketball games. He loved sports and in early years played baseball, softball, and umpired Charlottesville Little League after retiring his own glove.

Edwin looked forward to spring and planting the vegetable garden with Agnes and sharing the garden produce with family and friends.

The family extends special thanks and appreciation for a lifetime of care to Dr. Robert D. Ooghe and Dr. Christopher Friend, and to the Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Tina Whiting, Edith Thomas and nurses Myra, Karin, Julie, and Linda.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2008, at the Hill and Wood Chapel with the Chaplain David Flack officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Monticello Memory Gardens.

A visitation will be held from 4 until 5:30 p.m. Saturday May 10, 2008, at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contri-butions may be made to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 2200 Old Ivy Road, Suite 2, Charlottesville, VA 22903, or a charity of your choice.

At this time of your bereavement, may you be comforted in the knowledge others care. I met Ed in the early 60's when we worked in the National Bank Building. Ed was the most kind, soft spoken gentleman I have known. It was a pleasure to have known Ed for over 40 years. With deepest sympathy.

My sympathies and condolences are with you Peggy and Booty. Although years and distance have long separated us, there are many fond and lasting memories of our neighborhood and the Toms family. I will always recall the many kindnesses of Agnes and Ed as we grew up together.

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Ed. I had only met him a few times but Agnes was my first cousin and the Reed family got to know her when the Penn family visited us on Sandy Ridge.
