May 26, 1941 - Feb 3, 2026
Lathan Monroe Ewers, Jr. passed away on February 3, 2026.
Lathan was born on May 26, 1941, in Lynchburg, Va., the son of Lathan M. Ewers and Ruby Frances Jones Ewers. He graduated from Brookville High School in 1959. After completing his first year at VMI, he transferred to the University of Virginia, graduating from the College in 1963 and then from University of Virginia Law School in 1966. At the University he was a member of the Jefferson Society, serving a term as it's president and winning the Benjamin C. Moomaw oratorical competition. He participated in the debate club for two years and at the law school, he participated in the moot court competition.
After graduating, he spent four years at a law firm in New York. Lathan returned to Virginia as an associate at Hunton & Williams and became partner in 1976. He specialized in corporate securities, and mergers and acquisitions. He was especially proud of his representation of United Virginia Bankshares (Crestar), Wheat First Securities, Lowe's Companies, Inc. and Tultex Corporation.
Lathan was the widower of Elizabeth Heinrich Ewers, who preceded him in death in 2001. He is survived by his son, Thomas Heinrich Ewers (Sarah), and grandchildren, Caroline, Frances and William; a sister, Bonnie Gail Yelvington (John), and a brother, Richard Owen Ewers (Sara Jane). His sister, Mary Carolyn Kagey (William), passed away in 2011.
In his leisure time and during retirement, Lathan enjoyed time at his home, November Hill, where he kept a garden and tended to pet goats, chickens, guineas, peacocks and his bird dogs.
Lathan was an avid reader and known for his quick wit, distinct sense of humor, and passion for storytelling. He enjoyed hosting friends and family at his home, often preparing favorite dishes like cream chipped beef, quail, duck, and egg custard pie. Time spent with Lathan was always memorable. He was a member of the Commonwealth Club, sharing engaging stories over lunch, he enjoyed dancing in the Cotillion, and he dedicated years to Grace & Holy Trinity Church, serving a term on its vestry. He looked forward to annual beach trips, duck hunting in Arkansas and quail hunting with his son. Evenings were capped off with a martini or two by the fire. Above all else, his greatest love was for his son, Thomas.
A memorial service will be held at Grace & Holy Trinity Church on February 12, 2026 at 2 p.m. Memorial gifts can be made in his name to Grace & Holy Trinity Church and Ducks Unlimited.
