Effie Magdalene (Groves) Sims, age 84, of Vancouver, passed away on March 24, 2023.

On Oct. 30, 1938, Effie Magdalene was born to Ruth Groves in Jacksonville, FL. Her middle name was acquired from her father’s Mexican heritage, while her beauty was acquired from her mother.

Early in her childhood, Effie’s family began a series of moves out west. They made a few stops in Texas, settled for a while in Roswell, NM, before eventually landing in Vancouver, WA. Shortly after their arrival in Vancouver, her mother, Ruth, died. Effie was just 16.

As a young mother, Effie delighted in her sons and demonstrated great resolve, providing for them as a single parent. It was in that season, she met and married Wayne Sims. Together, they forged a life built on God’s grace. Adventure was found in the outdoors alongside Wayne, through advocating for Al-Anon participants and serving in various roles at New Heights Church. Effie’s life wasn’t without struggles, but she found steadiness in Jesus.

A stranger to no one, Effie loved people. From neighbors, family, Bible study friends, to passersby on the street, Effie loved a good visit. Her most favorite people being her family.

Effie is survived by her husband of 37 years, Wayne Sims; her two sons, Jerry (Tonia) Walsh, Patrick Michael (Tonya) Walsh; four grandchildren, Elizabeth, Mikey, Kristin Effie, Josh; two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Dedie. Effie was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth; two brothers, Mike and Butch; and her sister, Bonnie.

A memorial service will be held at New Heights Church, Central Vancouver Campus on Saturday, April 15, at 11:00 a.m. 7913 NE 58th Ave, Vancouver, WA 98665.
