Efren Reyna (known as Joaquin by many) passed away on Labor Day, September 2, 2024. He is survived by his best friend and wife, Maria Sagastegui Garza; his five step children, Juan Carlos (Nancy) Garza, Marta Amalia Sagastegui, Alberto Garza, Jose Luis Garza, Nora Ruby (Jubal) Heene; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two great great-grandchildren; seven siblings, Silverio, Hortencia, Lidia, Juan, Tomas, Alberto of Mexico, Jose Ismael of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Espiridion Reyna Alonzo and Antonia Castillo Castillo of Mexico; his siblings, Ana and Benito of Mexico; his step-son, Edelmiro Garza of Houston, TX; and his son-in-law, Fernando Sagastegui of Houston, TX.
Efren was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and eventually settled in Houston, TX where he met his future wife at work. They've been inseparable ever since. They have both run their own businesses including two restaurants and their residential cleaning service that is still in business today. He met Maria when she had six children, most of them grown, but he welcomed her family as his own and we all quickly learned how good he was for her and for us.
Not only did they work together daily, but they spent every minute of the weekend together as well. He was an early riser and started out his day by making coffee. He had a green thumb and kept a beautiful garden that he enjoyed watering. He loved surprising Maria with red roses any chance he got. They often traveled to Brownsville to visit family and the local markets to purchase even more plants for his garden. They'd hop over to Matamoros so that he could purchase new music CD's, visit friends, have lunch, and order homemade tortillas and fresh cheese to bring back to family. Every weekend they religiously visited her oldest son's gravesite to bring flowers and clean the site. He was always ready to go anywhere she wanted to go, whether it was to visit a newborn in the family, walk around the plant nurseries, celebrate a loved one or enjoy a meal together. He also very much enjoyed playing with dogs whether they were his own or when he visited family. He always had a smile on his face when it came to children or animals. Efren loved being with family during the holidays, especially if it meant a game of loteria. His enthusiastic way of calling out the cards left everyone in hysterics. He was a typically quiet man except for when you handed him the deck of loteria cards. "Corre y se va con.!"
For a man of his work ethic to enter heaven on Labor Day is poetic. He had an old-fashioned work ethic and everyone would agree he was the hardest working man we knew. What a team he and Maria made these past 40+ years. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
A visitation for Efren will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Chapel, 7723 Beechnut, Houston TX, 77074 with a service at 4:00 p.m.
