Eileen Eleanor Heffernan was born on September 4, 1934, in Madison, Nebraska to George and Libby (Smutny) Kreitman. She grew up in Madison and graduated from Madison High School in 1953. She got her teaching certificate and taught for a short time. Eileen then moved to Omaha, Nebraska and worked at Mutual of Omaha. She married Pat Heffernan on October 12, 1957, in California. The couple lived in California for a short time and then moved to Omaha, followed by Denison, Iowa and finally in the early 60’s to Dunlap, Iowa. Eileen worked at the Dunlap Nursing Home and at the Dunlap Sale Barn.
Eileen was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Dunlap. She was a great cook and loved to bake. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, crossword puzzles and spending time at the cabin.
Eileen died on Monday, October 17, 2022, at Azria Health Rose Vista in Woodbine, Iowa at the age of 88 years, one month and 13 days.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Aidan Green; great-grandson, Riley Beeck; daughter-in-law, Amy Heffernan; two brothers, George Kreitman, Jr. and Ordeen Kreitman. She is survived by her husband, Pat Heffernan of Dunlap; eight children, Dan Heffernan and his wife Diane of Dunlap, Jodi Blom of Des Moines, Iowa, Brian Heffernan and his wife Paula of Dunlap, Colleen and her husband Chad Heistand of Dunlap, Rick Heffernan (Sherry Gorka) of Dunlap, Rob Heffernan (Becky Bell) of Denison, Jim Heffernan of Dunlap and Maureen Heffernan (Jeff Malone) of Dunlap; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Kreitman and his wife Lois of North Bend, Nebraska; sister, Deanna and her husband Larry Schlecht of Scribner, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
