Funeral service for Elaine Horsman, 83, of Balaton, will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Balaton, MN., beginning at 11:00 a.m. A public visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Hoiland Cemetery in Garvin, MN, following the funeral service. Upon conclusion of the graveside service, a luncheon will be held at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Balaton, MN.
Elaine May (Benson) Horsman was born on May 15, 1940, to Bennie and Esther (Ring) Benson in Windom, MN. She grew up on farms outside of Westbrook, MN, and Lamberton, MN. She graduated from Lamberton High School in 1958. Upon graduating from High School she began working as a telephone operator in Tracy, MN. During this time she met the love of her life David Horsman at the High-Ho Cafe while on break from work. The couple was married on May 14, 1960, at the Church of Christ in Tracy, MN.
Together, Elaine and David had four children. They raised their family on a farm four and a half miles southwest of Tracy. Elaine was an integral part in helping David on the family farm, she managed 36,000 laying hens. In 1985 she began working as a nurse's aide at the Colonial Manor in Balaton, MN eventually taking a position at Sunrise Nursing Home in Tyler, MN. In 2019 Elaine took a position as a Direct Support Professional with HSI in Tracy, MN.
Elaine had a green thumb and loved to spend time in her garden. She was an avid reader and would keep up with current events by reading newspapers and magazines. She was a fashionista and loved to put together cute outfits. She enjoyed taking day trips to different wineries. Elaine was known for her witty and sarcastic humor. Elaine loved to travel, she took many trips to Florida, Washington, DC for a U.S. Capitol tour, and Alexandria, Virginia to visit her son James. Some highlights of her travels were trips to Marrowstone Island, WA, for her son James' marriage celebration, a family trip to Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach to visit her son Loren, and a trip with her daughter to Miami and Key West.
Elaine passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2024, while doing the job she loved, providing care for the individuals she worked with.
She is survived by her children, Angela (Matt) Welu, Loren Horsman, Thomas Horsman, James (Dawn Sibanda) Horsman; grandchildren JoAnn (Scott) Doyscher, Megan Welu; great-grandchildren Aubrey and Kenley Doyscher, Katy Papp; siblings William Benson, Dorothy Kleven; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Elaine is preceded in death by her husband David Horsman; parents Bennie and Esther (Ring) Benson; siblings Myron Benson, and Betty Leversedge; siblings-in-law Faye Benson, Jean Benson, and David Leversedge.
