Eleanor May Estep

Eleanor M. (Johnson) Estep, age 88, of Mauston passed away on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at Gundersen St. Joseph's Hospital in Hillsboro, WI. Eleanor was the daughter of Bertel and Grace (Remington) Johnson. She was born on April 15, 1937 in the Town of Lindina and baptized at Plymouth Lutheran Church. Eleanor attended Suldal School and graduated from Mauston High School in 1955.

After graduation Eleanor moved to Madison, WI and met the love of her life, Edwin R. Estep. They were united in marriage on May 5, 1962, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Madison, WI. Though they didn't have children of their own, they helped to raise three nephews and provided a positive influence on the lives of eleven other nephews and nieces.

Eleanor enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, sewing, crafting, and traveling with family and friends. She was a huge fan of sports, and loved watching the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Wisconsin Badgers.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband and parents; her brother, Harold Johnson; in-laws John and Edith Estep; and great-niece Kari Anderson. She is survived by her brother Bernard "Barney" (Joyce) Johnson; sister-in-law, Betty Johnson; sister-in-law, Irene (Ted) Martin; 14 nieces/nephews; 29 great-nieces/nephews; and 10 great-great-nieces/nephews.

A celebration of life will be held later this year, with family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory and sent to Bethany Lutheran Church, 701 Grove St, Mauston, WI 53948, in care of the Plymouth Church Steeple Fund.
