Eleonore Ruth Barritt, age 73 of Mt. Airy, MD, passed away unexpectedly on March 28, 2026. She was born on September 12, 1952 in Washington, D.C. to Olga and Edward Bechtold.
She dedicated much of her life to serving others as a longtime volunteer with the Mt. Airy Fire Department. Working first as an Emergency Medical Technician and then as a Cardiac Rescue Technician with the Mt. Airy, Winfield, and Taneytown fire departments, she helped save countless lives, offering care, skill, and compassion to her community over many years.
Beyond her service, she was deeply creative and found joy in quilting. An avid and talented quilter, she won several local competitions, and her work reflected both her artistry and her patience.
She shared a 53-year marriage with her beloved husband, and together they built a life centered on family and adventure. They traveled extensively in their various RVs and enjoyed activities like cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, horseback riding, and off-road exploring, making lasting memories along the way.
She was a devoted mother who filled her children’s lives with adventure, often whisking them away to Florida, the Jersey Shore, and destinations across the country. When her grandchildren came along, she continued those traditions—taking them camping, hiking, exploring local parks, and returning to the same Jersey Shore beaches she once shared with her children. She especially cherished vacations with her grandchildren and the many joyful hours spent playing UNO together.
She had a deep love for nature, especially flowers and birds, and was an avid gardener. Her home and yard reflected her care and appreciation for beauty in the natural world.
Family meant everything to her. She maintained close relationships with her siblings and found great joy in their regular Sunday check-in texts—a simple but meaningful tradition she treasured.
She is survived by her loving husband, Christopher Barritt; children Christina (Barritt) McNeill and Bryan Barritt; grandchildren Madeline, Ross, Connor, and Brayden; faithful black lab, Magic; five siblings; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be remembered for her generosity, creativity, adventurous spirit, and the deep love she held for her family and community.
The Family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 31, 2026, from 4-6 PM with a Celebration of Life Service at 6 PM at Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, 1212 West Old Liberty Road Sykesville, MD 21784 (beside South Carroll High School).
In lieu of flowers, her family invites you to honor her memory by caring for your garden, feeding the hummingbirds, or spending time in nature, as she so often did.
