Elinor Hogan-Downing Obituary

Elinor Hogan-Downing

Lebanon, NH - Elinor (Maddy) Hogan-Downing died peacefully at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative & Hospice Care on October 7, 2025, surrounded by her large family.

Ellie was born August 12, 1937, in Salisbury, NY to Joseph and Sophie Maddy. Elinor (Ellie) graduated from Herkimer High School and moved to Albany, NY where she worked as a surgical technician at Albany Medical Center. It was there she met the first love of her life James (Jim) Hogan. They eventually settled in Lebanon, NH in 1975 where they raised their five children, Matthew (Catherine) Newport, NH, Theresa Hunnwell (Calvin) Lebanon, NH, Catherine Folger (Keith) South Berwick, ME, Michael (Terri) York, ME, and Patricia Sites (Brian) Meridan, NH. Ellie loved more than anything being surrounded by her twenty-seven grandchildren, Bridget Sielicki, Mary Pollock, Caroline Mellish, Anne Hogan, Monica Smith, Nathan Hunnewell, Justine Roberts, Madelyn Tyack, Brendan Hogan, Ross Hogan, Hannah Toothaker, Thomas Hogan, Calvin Hunnewell, Claudia Folger, John Hogan, Reid Hogan, Emily Hunnewell, Jacinta Hogan, Avery Hunnewell, Matthew Sites, Nicholas Hogan, Rachael Sites, Yordonka Hunnewell, Molly Sites, Peter Hogan, V.J. Sites, Joseph Hogan, and 13 great-grandchildren.

After Jim's death in 1991, Ellie found the second love of her life, Willis Downing. They married in 1997. Willis's children, Kelly Downing (Bo) and their children, Dakota and Dylan, and son, Cullen (Peggy), made her large family even larger.

Ellie worked at Mascoma Savings Bank for 21 years. She was also a very active member in her community which included Sacred Heart Parish, volunteering at the Enfield Lioness Club, at DHMC, and Hospice. She was also a substitute teacher for several years in Enfield and Lebanon. Her strong will and love to help others made her a wonderful volunteer and community member.

Ellie loved quilting, golfing and spending many years traveling with Will in their RV, enjoying their retirement together. Ellie's favorite part of retirement was taking care of her grandchildren and spending time with her family.
