Obituary published on Legacy.com by Castillo Funeral Home on Feb. 8, 2024.
Elisa Tober Rayos was called home to God's kingdom on February 03, 2024, at the age of 77. She was born in
San Antonio, Texas on November 23, 1946, to Isabel Lopez and Jose Tober. She passed gracefully in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by family.
Elisa has been reunited in Heaven with her loving husband of 60 years, Juan "Superman" Rayos; her parents, four of her siblings, 2 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She is survived by her children Rebecca Rayos, Daniel Rayos, Diana Ybarra (Homer Ybarra), Rachel Arizmendi (Roy Arizmendi), Gracie Rayos and Gilbert Rayos. Siblings Mary Cisneros, Josie Davila, Juan Tober (Lola Tober), Elida Reyes (Basilio Reyes).
Born into a family with a strong faith, Elisa and her siblings regularly attended the church San Martin De Porres. Followed by Sunday lunches at Taco Rey.
Juan and Elisa met in the summer of 1961 as migrant workers in Michigan. Along with their families they would pick cherries, apples, strawberries and other fruits and vegetables. This is a tradition they would then choose to continue with their 4 oldest children. They were wed on March 17, 1962. Both Juan and Elisa agreed on the importance of family and hosted many large gatherings at their home of many years on Hayden Dr. These festivities would be well known throughout the neighborhood. According to them the best times were filled with music, food, family and friends. Although Elisa happily welcomed many into her home, respect was expected and if you failed to meet this standard, you would absolutely hear about it.
Elisa was also very well known for her wonderful cooking; especially her homemade flour tortillas that she made almost daily for 50 years. She often joked that when her husband retired from working; she too retired from her daily tortilla duties. Some of her other favorite dishes to cook were Capirotada, enchiladas with rice and beans, cornbread stuffing and tamales; to name a few.
Elisa enjoyed numerous hobbies such as: sewing, crocheting, completing jig-saw puzzles, playing solitaire and watching "Novelas" or Soap Operas. She also looked forward to joining in while watching game shows such as Jeopardy, The Price is Right and Family Feud. Fortunately, Elisa had Lady Luck on her side, whether in a game of Loteria with her family on a Sunday afternoon; a day trip of gambling to Louisiana or Eagle Pass; or in a card game of Spoons, Gin Rummy or Poker, Elisa came to win and most of the time she did not go home empty handed. In the odd chance you'd happen to best her, you might end up with a few pennies thrown your way or perhaps be called a "pig".
Elisa will be remembered as the kind, welcoming, warm-hearted woman she truly was. Family and friends speak of her inviting smile and soothing hugs that made you feel most welcomed into her inner circle. Her big, beautiful blue-green eyes had a way of providing comfort and understanding like no other. The loss of such a beautiful soul will be felt daily by her 6 children, 18 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, but her legacy will continue as she laid the foundation for multiple generations with her guidance and love.
We will be celebrating the life of Elisa T. Rayos at Castillo Funeral Home on Friday, March 1, 2024. Visitation will be from 4:00pm – 8:00pm; with the Rosary commencing at 6:00pm.
