Elizabeth Clark Obituary

Elizabeth Clark CHARLESTON - Elizabeth Hanahan Clark went to her Heavenly Father on Sunday September 22, 2024. Her homegoing celebration will be held at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Summerville, SC, on Saturday September 28, 2024, at 11 AM. Bettie was born in Charleston, SC, on June 13, 1936, the daughter of William Ogier and Elizabeth Lucas Hanahan. She attended Ashley Hall and graduated from Stuart Hall. She attended the University of South Carolina where she met and then married N. Eugene S. Scarborough on her 20th birthday. Bettie and Gene made their home in Charleston. They had 3 sons: Nicholas Eugene Stallworth Jr., Mikell Ross, and William Lucas and moved to Camden, SC, in 1964 where Bettie raised the boys, made their house a home, enjoyed all Camden had to offer, and volunteered her time. After divorce, Bettie graduated from USC with a degree in Library Science and served as librarian at Pine Tree Hill Elementary School. She met Henry Bayard Clark, Jr. at The Chez Moustache in Jeffersonville, VT, and they married at Grace Church, Camden in April 1977. Bettie moved to Vermont where she thrived on the beauty of the area and the kindness and openness of the people. She made friends and was involved in her community. She owned a Christian Bookstore in Essex Junction, enjoyed long walks and cross-country skiing in the woods around her home on Pleasant Valley Road. She hosted Bible studies at home which was open to others with Southern hospitality of good food, conversation, grace, and prayer. Their children were always welcome at the home she and Henry built (with the kids help - literally). She published "A Ham for All Seasons," a cookbook inspired by many meals shared over a long-lasting Christmas ham! Bettie returned to Charleston in 2012 and made her home on Exchange Street where she could watch people and boats come and go in the harbor. She was always open for guests to come and stay, loved to walk around town, and was an encyclopedia of Charleston's past. She was always willing to assist others. She is predeceased by her parents; husbands, Gene and Henry; her brothers, William O. Hanahan, Jr. and Buist Lucas Hanahan; plus sister, Mary Ross Hanahan; and stepson, Tom Clark. She is survived by her sister, Frances Gascoyne Hanahan; sons, Gene, Mikell (Mary), William; stepson, Bill Clark; stepdaughters, Lynn Hill and Cathy (Jan) Bansch; grandchildren, Jessica (Nick) Bodenhamer; Nicholas Scarborough, III; Ross Scarborough, Elizabeth (Walt) Burnett; Thomas Scarborough; as well as 5 stepgrandchildren: Alison, Max (Sarah), Katie, Jacqui, and Jaclyn ;and 2 great grandchildren, Lucas and Lydia Burnett. Special thanks to her caregivers who attended her needs: God the Father, Jesus Christ, The Holy Spirit, the good people from Interim Healthcare, Home Instead, and Agape Hospice including, but not only: Karen Hodge, Vivian Ojehomoh, Linda Standridge Justice, Diann Perry, Kelly Meaker, Megan Brown, Lynia Benni, and others who loved and served her. Mom, you were a blessing to everyone who had the privilege of meeting you and many who didn't but received your sharing of your gifts. I am grateful that God chose you to be my mother. Glad you are now in your happy place with those who have gone before. The loss of you is challenging however knowing we will be together in eternity brings me comfort, hope, joy, and peace. I love you, mom, and know that you loved me. Thank you for all the prayers over my lifetime.
In Christ alone,
