Elizabeth Ann (Liz) Russell Eppinger, age 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Westminster-Canterbury, Winchester, VA.
She was born on April 19, 1933, in Gainesboro, VA, the daughter of the late Rev. Clarence Gilbert and Ruth Elma Richard Russell. She was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs for many years where she held numerous leadership positions, worked with the children's ministry and in outreach to the community. She shared many laughs and good times cooking with her friends in the church basement. She most recently attended the Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester.
She was a 1951 graduate of Charles Town High School and a 1955 graduate of Shepherd College. She dedicated 28 years to teaching third grade at Widmyer Elementary and Hancock Primary School. She was a member of ETA Chapter, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a women's educational honor society, and was a past president of both the Junior Women's Club of Berkeley Springs and the Morgan County Association of Retired School Employees.
On July 12, 1959, Liz married Herbert L. Eppinger, who preceded her in death on January 19, 2022. They shared 62 wonderful years together, a life filled with love, faith, family, dear friends, and travel.
She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Herb Eppinger, Jr. and wife Bobbie of Martinsburg, WV, Ann Eppinger and husband Scott Davidson of Orlando, FL, and Beth Little and husband Doug of Keyser, WV. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Jane (Jay) Russell, of Berkeley Springs; six grandchildren, Josh Eppinger (Andrea), Hayley Eppinger (Thomas), Will Sealy, Becca Sealy, Hannah Little-Cooper (Chris), Morgan Little; and one great granddaughter, Nora Eppinger. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Richard "Dick" Russell. She treasured her family, and included her many sisters- and brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews in her close family.
She was a cherished friend and a compassionate listener, always ready to support loved ones with a delicious meal, a thoughtful call, or a heartfelt note. Her grandchildren were especially fond of her cookies and world's best macaroni and cheese. She adapted beautifully to changing times, happily texting with her grandchildren and keeping up with them on social media.
A private burial was held. A memorial service is planned for Friday, October 17, 2025 at 2:00 pm at First United Methodist Church in Berkeley Springs, WV.
Memorials may be made to McEat-Morgan County Emergency Assistance Team, PO Box 988, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411 or Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork St, Suite 405, Winchester, VA 22601-3876.
