Elizabeth Getty Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, Inc. - Colchester on Dec. 16, 2025.
Elizabeth "Betty" Getty, 91, of Salem, Connecticut, passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 14, 2025, at Elmbrook Village in Bozrah, CT. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; Elizabeth's life was defined by love, family, and quiet strength.

Born on June 5, 1934 in Bethany, CT to Amelia Hummel and Floyd Day; Elizabeth grew up with a lively spirit and a deep appreciation for nature. Throughout her life, she loved the simple joys that connected her to the world around her-gardening in the spring sunshine, feeding the birds outside her window, and caring for her beloved Arabian horse, which she raised with patience and affection.

Elizabeth shared 69 cherished years with her late husband, Bernard Getty. Together they built a life filled with devotion, hard work, and family. A milestone close to Elizabeth's heart was raising her children and later watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. Her pride in them was evident to all who knew her. For 32 years, she drove school bus number 1 for Salem School, an endeavor she took on with the same warmth and dedication she gave to her family.

Elizabeth also enjoyed the time she spent with her family in the Bahamas. She cherished the walks on the beach finding seashells with her granddaughter Victoria and the beautiful warm weather and crystal seas.

Elizabeth will be remembered for her steadfast devotion as a wife and mother and for the gentleness she extended toward people and animals alike. Her nurturing soul and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone whose lives she touched.

She now reunites in Heaven with her parents, Amelia and Floyd Day, her husband, Bernard Getty, and her grandson, Kristofer Getty.

She is survived by a daughter and two sons: Linda Getty Larry and Gary Getty and their wives Mary Ellen and Linda. Also, grandchildren Victoria Sullivan, Joshua, Jacob, Miranda, and Melissa Getty, and great-grandchildren Hannah and Hunter Sullivan, and Levi and Lucas Getty.

A memorial service to celebrate Elizabeth's life will be determined at a later date. A poem from Bernard, dearly cherished by their family, will be read in her honor. She was deeply loved and will be missed terribly, but her spirit will live on in the love she gave so freely.

Our deepest condolences to Betty's family and friends on her passing. Our memories of Betty go all the way back to when she was our bus driver. I never had to be concerned with her behind the wheel!
May your loving memories of Betty help you through this difficult time.
