Elizabeth Jeffrey Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Fairmount Funeral Home, Cemetery & Crematory on Mar. 18, 2026.
ELIZABETH PETRONELLA JEFFREY, nee VAN DAAL, familiarly known as " Lisa," was born on the 13th day of June 1940 in Nickerie, Suriname, to the late MARIE VAN DAAL CORLETTE of Nickerie, Suriname, and WILLIAM GONSALVES nee JEFFREY of No. 50 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana. Elizabeth was the second born of twin

daughters to their parents and migrated to Guyana when she was eight years old to live with their father and his extended family. One of his aunts, RACHEL WILKIE eventually was their main caretaker, and the girls lived with her and her husband in Palmyra, Berbice until they eventually migrated to Georgetown, Guyana to start their own families.

While in Palmyra, Lisa attended the Leeds Anglican School and was trained by Aunt Rachel and her husband in survival skills that she carried with her throughout her life. Aunt Rach instilled values in her that she passed on to her own children and grandchildren. Values of hard work and of household management, and of contentment, and of honesty. As a dashingly beautiful young lady, Lisa met the now deceased "auspicious" GEORGE ROLAND HYMAN, Sr., in Berbice, and together they had four children: GENEVA, COREEN, ESTHER (ALLISON) and the late GEORGE ROLAND HYMAN, Jr. When George Sr., migrated to the United States of America, Lisa singlehandedly raised their four children, with help from her lifelong partner and twin Annitta.

Much of her work life was centered around taking care of others, a skill that was honed and transferred from who she was as a person. Lisa migrated to the United States to join her children in 1994, where she finished her career as the Household Manager of her children and Grandchildren's life, and as a Freelance News Reporter of every famous person's business!! From Politicians to Religious Leaders to the Stars. There was not a thing she did not know about what was going on in their lives. And she had a viewpoint – she took sides – in their marriages and in their children's lives and in any important decision they were making. Lisa was an excellent cook – just ask all of our friends!! Afternoons were known for her famous coconut buns and swank – made from scratch. Her iPad is full of every recipe she hoped to try, and

which she has left for Genny to complete.

She was also an avid knitter who knitted across seasons with whatever material was en vogue at the time – from

polythene to crochet thread – to wool. But her most favorite of all was her crochet thread, and one or the other of her children or granddaughter would have had to travel cross country to source her thread (thank God for Amazon now.) I am sure that if we were to do a poll – more than half of us have something in our homes that Lisa knitted, with Ayana holding the results of her final hurrah, as she was trying to finish those pieces with such urgency, as though she was under a time

limit. Well now we know that she was indeed!

In the early hours of March 15, 2026, Lisa left us to be with the Lord. Earlier that day she was given her last rites by her pastor, Reverend Dr. Carl Stuart, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and her twin. She was cognitive until about 7 minutes before her passing, and she gave us our peace and affirmed that she was ready to meet with her Lord. And for that we would be eternally grateful – sad and heartbroken – but at peace with her passing. NO MORE PAIN!!!!
