Family and friends mourn the passing of Elizabeth Sue "Miss Liz" Lampkins who passed away peacefully on Monday, February 9, 2026, at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Farrell after a extended illness. She was 87.
Elizabeth was born on March 29, 1938 in
Pulaski, VA to Raymond and Mattie Johnson.
Relocating with her family to
Sharpsville, PA in 1942, Elizabeth attended Sharpsville schools and graduated with honors from Sharpsville High School. She went on to attend Choffin School of Practical Nursing where she graduated in 1961.
She began her professional career as a surgical and medication nurse at Northside Hospital in
Youngstown, OH; also gaining employment at Youngstown's Southside and Saint Elizabeth hospitals, and the former Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital in Farrell.
The highlight of Elizabeth's professional career eventually led to her being recognized as a "Community Champion" by the US House of Representatives in 2018.
It was a passionate "labor of love" which began after volunteering with the Shenango Valley Urban League CoMES Center-Sickle Cell Program when an illness left her unable to return to nursing.
Utilizing her exemplary organizational and writing skills, she was able to secure limited funding for the Sickle Cell program, eventually being named director of the Project WIC and Sickle Cell Program within the Health & Wellness Department of the Shenango Valley Urban League.
She would receive an enourmous amount of ongoing education and training in Sickle Cell Disease, along with HIV-AIDS intervention, teen pregnancy intervention, Black women's health issues, as well as education in health issues involving aging citizens.
Elizabeth also planned and conducted workshops addressing the needs of children and youth in Mercer County.
She was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the National WIC Association, and was a member of various boards of directors, and advisory councils for organizations that served to uplift disadvantaged people and communities.
She held the position of Project WIC Director for 44 years. Among a plethora of accolades and commendations within that time, was the National Association of WIC Directors Service Award, and recognition by the Sickle Cell Foundation of Pittsburgh, for Commitment and Service in the care and lives of persons with Sickle Cell Disease.
At age 80, she finally, albeit reluctantly, decided to retire in 2018.
Elizabeth was a life-long member of Second Baptist Church in Sharpsville where she served for many years as financial secretary, and on the Missionary Board and Pastor's Aide.
She was an avid and exceptionally good cook and baker. She loved gardening, decorating, volunteering, traveling and watching game shows - especially "The Price is Right!"
She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Marion Nelson Lampkins Sr., her son Marion Lampkins Jr., her parents, a sister Gwendolyn, and her brother Raymond Johnson Jr.
She leaves to honor her memory two daughters, Kim Lampkins-Atkinson (West Middlesex) and Susan Lampkins-Hanson (Austintown), two sisters, Jacqueline Rose (
Shaker Heights, OH), and Mary Williams (
Atlanta, GA), a beloved brother-in-law, William "Billy" Lampkins (Devonna) of Philadelphia, and dear friend Carmen Craig (Farrell), who was like a son to her; five grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Hanson (North Carolina), Garrett Maxwell Atkinson (New York), Kaela Elizabeth Lampkins (Pittsburgh), Marion Lampkins III (South Carolina), Raymond James Lampkins (Florida); and, one great-grandchild Marion Nelson Lampkins IV, in addition to a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
