Elizabeth McCarty of Falmouth died on Saturday, December 27 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Cotuit. She was 99.

Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to Mary (Donahoe) and Michael McManus she was the third of six siblings. Along with her four sisters she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, and, later, attended St. Francis University (B.Sc.1948) in Antigonish. She graduated from University of Toronto with a Masters degree in Nutrition in 1949.

In 1950 she married Dr. Hugh MacKenzie . They lived for two years in Quebec before returning to Halifax where Hugh opened his family practice in 1953. When Betty was widowed with three young children in 1958 she went back to work as a dietician. In 1960 she joined the Canadian Navy as one of only two hospital dieticians in the service in Canada.

While serving in the Navy she met Captain Robert Watson, a U.S. nuclear submarine captain. They married in 1964 and the combined family of seven children moved to Winchester Ma. After the marriage dissolved in 1967 Betty returned to work as a dietician at Symmes Hospital in Arlington. It was there that she met her husband Dr. William McCarty.

While visiting friends in Falmouth Bill and Betty visited Falmouth Port and bought one of the early condos. Shortly after that they were married at St. Anthony's Church. After Bill's death, when Betty eventually retired, she moved permanently to Falmouth. She became a lector and CCD teacher at St. Anthony's Church in East Falmouth as well as a "Curler" at the Cape Cod Curling Club.

Betty along with her great friend and neighbor Babe Dundon spent many years entertaining friends and family from Nova Scotia. On warm summer days they could usually be found at the beach in East Falmouth or the Falmouth Port pool – often with grandchildren in tow.

Betty is survived by her daughter Mary Pat MacKenzie and husband Donald Grant of Falmouth; her son Christopher MacKenzie and his wife Tamara of Gloucester; her son Hugh MacKenzie and his wife Karen of Melrose and Waquoit; stepdaughter Jane Wykoff of Vermont; stepdaughter Martha Murphy, stepson John Watson and his wife Jane and stepdaughter Lucia Watson and her husband Sandy of Rhode Island.

Betty is also survived by ten grandchildren, four great grandchildren, her sister Pat Woodford of Nova Scotia, 30 nieces and nephews and numerous grand nieces and nephews as well as her oldest friend Joyce Madden.

Her funeral will be held later in the spring and burial will be in Halifax N.S.
