Elizabeth Mehler Obituary
Elizabeth, (Betty) was born on March 10, 1922 in Willow Grove PA. She was pre deceased by her sister, Gloria Calise (age 83) and her husband Clemens F Mehler, (age 47) and their son Clemens Francis Mehler (age 73) with whom she shared many happy memories. A loving mother to three children, grandmother to six, and great-grandmother to seven, family was the cornerstone of Betty's life.
Betty was a very active youth growing up in suburban Phila attending Upper Moreland HS. She was a cheerleader, ran track, played field hockey and basketball. Outside of school she was an avid roller and ice skater. She met my father roller skating. Later her love of dancing allowed her to become a beautiful sight on the dance floor doing the waltz, cha cha, jitterbug, polka and endless line dances. Her zest for life and contagious joy was only accentuated while on the dance floor.
She graduated from Hahnemann Hospital as an RN and worked in the ER and in Communicable Diseases. She enlisted in the Naval Reserve after her degree because she wanted to give back to the country she loved so much, Ensign Elizabeth Mehler. Her yearbook comments echoed the same sentiments: always fun, loved life, a talented athlete, artist and a little mischievous, all showcased in a beautiful woman. Her fashion sense and good looks were dominated only by her inner beauty.
She met Clemens and they were married at Curtis Arboretum in Wyncote. They had 3 children and as a stay-at-home mom took care of just about everything in the home. After Clemens passed, Betty went back to school to earn her Masters Degree in Education and Science so she could be a school nurse. She graduated Magna Culm Laude while still raising 3 children. She went on to earn her Masters +30 also with high honors to give her better seniority in the schools she would be assigned. Betty was a dedicated school nurse for St Huberts for over a decade. She was loved by the students for her compassionate approach and her nurturing role as a confidant.
Betty continued to stay active in her golden years. She held a gym membership until the age of 95 and drove herself back and forth daily. A love of crossword puzzles, books and drawing allowed her to keep her mind sharp. We are comforted knowing she lived a life full of love and joy that she shared with everyone she met. She truly made the most out of her 102 years on this earth.
Betty will be celebrated on Saturday January 18th at Mary Mother of the Redeemer Church at 1325 Upper State Road in North Wales, with the viewing starting at 10:00AM and Mass at 11:15AM. Friends and relatives are welcome and encouraged to join us.
