Elizabeth Nicodemus Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Suchon Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Plymouth on Oct. 1, 2025.
Elizabeth Eva (Betty) Nicodemus died peacefully September 23, 2025, at The Waterford in Plymouth, where she had been a resident for 4 weeks.
Betty was born on March 4, 1931, in Milwaukee to Armand and Clara (Fiebig) Stephan. Betty grew up in Milwaukee, but during the depression lived on her grandparents' farm in Plymouth. The family returned to Milwaukee, where Betty graduated from Washington High School in 1949. Betty completed one year of business school.
Betty worked at Lauer's grocery store in Plymouth before working as a teacher's aide at Parkview School and finishing out her career as the high school guidance office secretary, retiring in 1996. She was a Camp Fire Girls leader for several years. Betty was an active member of First Congregational UCC in Plymouth for more than 60 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher and on several committees. You could always count on Betty working in the church kitchen for church dinners.
Betty loved anything to do with water: she was an avid swimmer, loved sailing small crafts and waterskiing, and was a certified scuba diver in her younger years. She taught swimming lessons in Plymouth, was the waterfront director at Camp Rokolio for one year before serving as the waterfront director at Camp Anokijig for many years. Betty taught water aerobics at Plymouth High School until she was well into her 80's!
Betty was also a certified first aid and CPR instructor through the American Red Cross.
In addition to her love of water activities, Betty enjoyed gardening, reading, completing jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, and other games. She was accomplished in sewing which included completing a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.
Betty loved traveling to visit her large collection of friends and relatives. She travelled to North Carolina, California, West Virginia, and Michigan; she also travelled to Anchorage, Alaska several times to visit her daughter and grandchildren. At age 86 she fulfilled a bucket list wish by taking a riverboat cruise in Germany!
Betty loved to spend time at the cottage her grandfather built on North Harper Lake, near Rib Lake, Wisconsin, and at her parent's lakefront retirement home in Door County. She especially loved Door County fish boils - she was very proud of her ability to debone the fish!
Betty is survived by daughters: Wanda Hadley of Florida, LuAnn (Chuck) Kaucic of Anchorage, Alaska; Lisa (Tim) Lyons of Fair Grove, Missouri; Lora (Jim) Jacoby of Plymouth, and Beth (Reiner) Kerntke of Plymouth; 12 grandchildren: Amy Nicodemus (husband Hans Pieper), Christopher (Hanna) Lyons, Monica (Chad) Gallinger, Sarah (Adam) Lovinggood, Rachel Rendall (husband Ryan Blietz), Josh Kerntke, Natalie Andre, Hannah Rendall, Felicia (Andrew) Middleton, Nathan Andre, Abigail (Kyle) Townsend, and Gabe Kerntke; and 10 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by a sister-in-law, Catherine Irwin, and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, son, Bruce Hadley; two brothers Robert (Ruth) and Richard Stephan, and sister Marjorie Allingham (Edgar).
Per Betty's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service and celebration of Betty's life will be held on Saturday, October 25 at Noon, at First Congregational UCC, 1405 S. Hwy 67, Plymouth. Reverend Kristal Klemme, pastor of the church, will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 - noon at the church, with a luncheon immediately following next door at Suchon Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established which will be used for a gift for Camp Anokijig in Betty's name. If you would like to donate to Betty's memorial, check can be made out to the Family of Elizabeth Nicodemus. Thank you for remembering Betty in this way.
