Betty is my Best Friend
We met through our love of selling Avon. I started selling in March, 1982, when my son was 13 months old. 5 months later, I became a "Group Leader", and Betty was the top seller in my Group. We became instant friends! Over the next several years, she babysat my son when I was in a bind, took me to Avon meetings and Doctor appointments in the back of her truck when my leg was in a cast after surgery, and was always there for me, no matter what.
Our favorite times were at the campground, where she and Walter had a membership and camper. They went every weekend; I popped in many, many times for the day or to spend the night. Betty and I would stay up late playing Scrabble and Upwords. One of my favorite words was 'ID', which bugged her until she started to use it, too! I would always want to use Spanish words -- they seemed to enter my head easier than English ones, so for my birthday one year, she gave me the Spanish version of Scrabble! She got to use the Spanish-English Dictionary, I had to use my own knowledge -- she beat me shamefully!
3 times a summer, (Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day) the campground had a 'yard sale'. I would rent a trailer, and we took all our Avon stock to sell. We matched prices with each other, and knew what the other one had to sell, so we'd send customers back and forth to make sure they were able to find what they needed.
My husband, Jim, and I loved Betty and Walter. At the campground, Jim and Walter would talk while Betty and I 'did our Avon', and we enjoyed so many meals together. Every Christmas, Betty made Jim Rum Balls, and me Fudge. Friendship doesn't get any better than this, and she will always live in my heart!
