Elizabeth Schomberg Obituary

Elizabeth Marie Schomberg

August 15, 1937 - April 17, 2025

BARRE MILLS - Elizabeth Marie Schomberg, 87, of Barre Mills, Wis., known affectionately to friends and family as "Betty", passed away peacefully on April 17, 2025, in the comforting presence of her loved ones at her cherished family home.

Born on August 15, 1937, in the small town of North Bend, Wisconsin, Betty was the daughter of Matt and Jennie (Olson) Anderson. Her early years were spent at Lee School, a rural country school, before she graduated from Melrose High School.

After graduation, Betty spent her first summer working in North Carolina. She then moved to and worked in Milwaukee. Another summer was spent in Washington State with her aunt and uncle. She then moved to Minneapolis and spent her weekends coming home to see her family in Melrose, and this is when she met Fred at a dance.

Betty's journey of faith and commitment began at South Beaver Creek Church, where she was baptized, confirmed, and, on October 20, 1962, married Fred Schomberg. Their union was not only a partnership in marriage but also in their dedication to the beautiful, successful farm. Betty worked tirelessly alongside Fred, and together they raised four wonderful children: Sue, Paul, Mary, and John. She was known for making the best noon meals for the entire family and the hired men.

A woman of boundless love and kindness, Betty's heart was most full when surrounded by her family. She hosted countless family holidays for her children and grandchildren and the family spent most Sunday afternoons in Melrose with her brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews. Her quick wit and sense of humor made her so much fun to be around.

Betty's adventurous spirit was as vast as the farm she called home. She and Fred shared an enjoyment of traveling to distant lands such as Africa, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, Guam and beyond. Each journey brought back a tapestry of stories, which Betty delighted in sharing. Betty enjoyed countless car rides through the midwest countryside. These excursions with Fred often led to the Norske Nook, where they savored a slice of pie.

Betty is survived by her children, Paul (Paulette) Schomberg, Mary (Sean) Gavaghan, and JohnSchomberg; her beloved grandchildren, Samuel and Frederick Griffin, Dwight (Kelcey), Drew, and Delaney (fiancé Colton Meyer) Schomberg, Alana (Josh) Hackworth and Kara (Juan Basabe) Gavaghan, and Kyle and Ava Schomberg; three great-grandchildren, Millie, Reylin, and Baylor Schomberg; son-in-law, Tim Griffin; brother Roger (Carolyn) Anderson; sisters-in-law, Pat Anderson, and Norma Anderson; along with other relatives and dear friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Matt and Jennie Anderson; a daughter, Sue Griffin in 2020; husband, Fred in 2022; brothers, Glenn, Myron, David, Donald; sisters, Elaine Johnson, Mary Jane Rand and Helen Libby.

A private family funeral was held last weekend at St. John's Lutheran Church in Barre Mills. She was laid to rest next to her husband Fred in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church.
