Elizabeth Lynn "Betsy" Waltman, born June 20, 1954, in
Arlington, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on February 2, 2026 after a long battle with cancer. Betsy leaves behind a legacy measured not only in ribbons and accomplishments, but in lives shaped, confidence built, and generations brought together through a shared love of horses. She was the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Marron), the youngest of four sisters, life partner to William Foster, and cherished friend to many.
In 1964, Betsy moved to Niles with her family, where her lifelong devotion to horses and community blossomed. What started as a young girl's passion became a life's calling. Betsy began Horsesport, her long standing and successful business, in 1985, first at Bittersweet Farm, which later transitioned to Laughin' Place Stables - the very place she began her riding career.
Over many decades, Betsy became far more than a horsewoman; she became a mentor, teacher, and steady presence in the lives of countless children and families. She built a community rooted in dedication, resilience, and the deep bond between horse and rider. Generations of riders passed through her barn doors and grew to become family. Many would later return with children of their own.
For many, Betsy's barn was more than a place to ride. As one former student and lifelong friend reflected, "I wasn't born in a barn, but thankfully I was raised in one." Under Betsy's guidance, it became a second home: a place where young people grew not only as riders, but as individuals. Betsy created a haven for many, and a supportive community to come together. Her students were fortunate enough to learn many of life's lessons through their work with horses, with Betsy as the ever present, quick-witted guide, who always had an exceptional sense of humor. The farm was a place where many felt heard, seen, understood and included. Upon reflection by many who had the privilege of learning from Betsy, the most treasured childhood memories were those shared at Laughin' Place. Betsy understood that the lessons learned in the saddle, such as patience, responsibility, humility, and perseverance extended far beyond the arena. Her students remember her high standards and unwavering belief in their potential. Betsy lived and modeled the principle that failure was only temporary and hard work and perseverance brought more lasting rewards.
Her barn was alive with energy and warmth. Her beloved barn dogs, most often rescued, dashed through the aisles, napped in sunlit doorways, and faithfully followed her from stall to stall. The rhythm of hooves mixed with the patter of paws and the laughter of many created a world that felt grounded, joyful, and safe. The animals, like the riders, thrived under her steady care.
Betsy had an extraordinary ability to see possibility in a green horse, in a nervous rider, or in a person unsure of their place in the world. She offered correction without cruelty, encouragement without hesitation, and support without condition.
Her influence extended well beyond Michigan. Riders, friends, and families across the country carry forward the lessons she instilled and the confidence she helped build. Her loss is felt not only in Niles but far beyond, by all who were touched by her wisdom, experience, humor, and steadfast devotion.
She will be remembered for her strength, her generosity of spirit, the loyal dogs at her side, and above all, her enduring love for horses and the children she helped grow into capable, compassionate adults.
Betsy's legacy lives on in every rider who finds courage in the saddle, in every barn that feels like home, and in every life shaped by her guidance.
One of Betsy's favorite self-portraits was taken on the back of her beloved Irish stallion, Sully, riding through the fields on her farm. She titled it My View of Heaven. What a gift to realize one's dreams as she had, and to inspire those of so many others.
