Elizabeth ( Betty) Willhauck

May 29, 1932 - September 17, 2025

Elizabeth ( Betty) Duncan Willhauck died peacefully, September 17, 2025, surrounded by her children. She was born May 29, 1932, in Erwin, TN. She was the daughter of the late Haskett and Alice Duncan.

Betty grew up in Kingsport, TN. She attended the University of Tennessee at Martin where she met her husband, Marion Willhauck. When he was commissioned in the Navy, Betty became a military spouse moving to many different locations in this country as well as Japan over their 22 years of service. Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1978, they moved to Greensboro, NC.

While serving as a military spouse, she was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross. Betty served as Chairman of Volunteers for the Far Eastern Area which included, Japan, Taiwan, Korea and the Philippines. Returning stateside, she was the Red Cross Volunteer Director for Service to Military Institutes and Military Hospitals for the Eastern Area of the United States.

Betty was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro where she was a former member of vestry, and Saint Catharine's Chapter. She served on many committees and programs at the church over the years.

She was a member of the Greensboro Symphony Guild, the Kirkwood Garden Club, as well as the Bookmakers book club. She was designated a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

Betty was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Cdr. Marion Willhauck (USN Retired); her parents; her sister, Nancy Wallace and son-in-law, Dr. Jacek Szypulski.

She is survived by her sister, Ann Willhauck of Littleton, CO; her daughter, Susan Szypulski of Greensboro, NC; her son, Stephen (Susan) Willhauck of Edenton, NC; four grandchildren; three-step grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four step grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank her medical team, Dr. Jordan and Dr. South and their caring office staffs as well as AuthoraCare (Hospice) of Greensboro, NC. Many thanks to the Staff and residents of Abbotswood, where Betty spent eight happy years before her recent move to her daughter's home.

A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please, make donations to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Greensboro or AuthoraCare of Greensboro.
