Ellen Stokes Burgin, 94, of Indianapolis and formerly of Carmi, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loving family on August 12, 2024. Ellen was born September 21, 1929, near Crossville, Illinois, to Clarence M. and Nettie (Hughes) Stokes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald W. Burgin, of Detroit, Michigan; and her sister, Virginia Stokes (Don) Burris. Survivors are daughters Nancy (Gary) Burriss of Indianapolis and Joyce Burgin of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; and grandchildren Natalie Burriss, Eric (Briana) Burriss, and Nicholas (Katlyn) Burriss, all of Indianapolis.
Ellen graduated from Crossville High School with the Class of 1947. After training in Kansas City, she went to work for Braniff Airways in Dallas, Texas, where she met Ron. They married in 1954. They lived in Dallas; Charlotte, North Carolina; and northeast Ohio where they raised their two daughters. Ron and Ellen later lived in Beaumont, Texas, before finally settling in Carmi where they lived for many years. There they were members of the First United Methodist Church and the White County Historical Society.
Ellen enjoyed the friendship of the Carmi "Angels in Bloom," the "Dairy Queen lunch ladies," and many others along with those who served her professionally up to the present (You know who you are!).
In 2016, Ellen moved to Indianapolis to be near family. She was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Southside Indianapolis, where she was served and loved so well.
A funeral service will be held on August 21, 2024, at 7 pm ET, at Reformed Presbyterian Church of Southside Indianapolis, 6969 South Meridian Street, Indianapolis, IN, 46217.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024, at 2 pm CST, at Stokes Cemetery near Crossville, IL.
