Ellen Rees Handberry, age 70, passed away peacefully on February 15th after a brief illness. Ellen's life will be celebrated at Osborn Funeral Home, 3631 Southern Ave., Shreveport, Louisiana on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at 11:30 a.m. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Her wishes will be fulfilled with a private gathering to scatter her remains.
Ellen was born in San Angelo, Texas to Holly E. Rees and Betty Fibich Rees. She grew up in Bryan, Texas, attended Bryan High and graduated at the top of her college class at Stephen F. Austin. Ellen was an educator for most of her working life, she taught fifth grade in both San Antonio and Hudson, TX.
Ellen married the love of her life, Ron Handberry, in Bryan, TX, in 1977, and they shared forty-seven wonderful years together. Ron proposed on Valentine's Day in 1976, making the day before her passing exactly forty-eight years since that special day. Ellen was a devoted, loving and adored wife, as well as Ron's dearest friend.
They made their home in several places across Texas, including San Antonio, Kerrville, Corsicana, and Lufkin. After moving to Louisiana, they first settled in Alexandria, then Pineville, before making Shreveport their home in 2007. While in Shreveport, Ellen worked for a time at Chick-fil-A on Youree Drive.
Ellen was known by family and friends for her warmth, kindness, and radiant smile. She had a gift for making others feel loved and remained deeply connected with friends from her high school and college years. Her faith was central to her life, and she cherished the fellowship of Clearview Church in Shreveport, as well as the churches she attended in other cities, forming lifelong friendships along the way. She found great joy in her Belles Bible Study group on Mondays, Rachel's study on Thursdays, and the Clearview ladies' lunch gatherings. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, Ellen immersed herself in scripture, filling her Bible with notes and reflections. She was a source of joy and inspiration, the sweetest of friends, and a beloved "Grandberry" to her five very special grandchildren.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Ron Handberry; son, Nathan Handberry and wife, Lydia of Denver, Colorado; son, David Handberry of Shreveport; her five precious grandchildren, Elizabeth and Holly of Shreveport, and Ellery, Walden, and Hazel of Denver; brother, Lane Rees of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; and sister, Ann Davis of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is also survived by numerous extended family and friends.
The family is deeply grateful for the exceptional care Ellen received from Dr. Anthony Stuart, CenterWell Home Health, and the compassionate staffs at Willis-Knighton Pierremont and Willis-Knighton North. Their kindness and dedication brought comfort and support during her time of need.
Memorials in Ellen's honor may be made to Clearview Church.
