Ellen V. Hatcher

September 3,1943 – December 19, 2025

Ellen "Sissy" Laphan Hatcher, a devoted mother, grandmother, and the spirited matriarch of her family, passed away peacefully after a long illness at her home in Gloucester City, NJ on December 19, 2025. She was 82 years old.

Known affectionately to all as "Sissy," Ellen was the rock of her family, a steady presence defined by a sharp wit and a selfless nature. She lived by the code that no one should ever be inconvenienced on her account, yet she would go to the ends of the earth for those she loved.

Sissy's life was punctuated by moments of spontaneous joy and generosity. She was the kind of mom who would surprise you with a trip to Atlantic City at midnight or bundle ten teenage girls into a car for a week down the shore.

Her passions were loud and proud. Sissy lived for the Philadelphia Eagles (Go Birds!) and famously wore the title "Mother Sissy", a nickname bestowed upon her by Irving Fryar himself, like a badge of honor during every game. When the season ended, she turned her attention to the quiet beauty of her beloved rock garden. She was a true friend to nature, spending her days watching the birds at her feeders and ensuring the neighborhood squirrels never went hungry.

Of all the titles she held, from Mom to Wife to "Mother Sissy", the one she cherished above all else was "Grandmom." Her grandchildren were the lights of her life. She was their biggest cheerleader and made it to every one of their events she could. She celebrated their successes with flair; good grades were famously rewarded with one of her signature tap dances. She was so proud of the young adults they have all become.

Sissy is survived by her husband, Willard "Hatch" Hatcher; her daughter, Teresa "Teri" Hatcher; her son-in-law, Brett Morris; and her beloved grandchildren, Joey Carpenter, Matthew Carpenter, and Amanda Morris. She also leaves behind her brothers, Walter "Butch" Laphan and James "Bun" Laphan.

She is reunited in peace with her son, the late Mark Willard Hatcher.

Per Sissy's wishes, there will be no public services. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to assist with recouping medical costs. https://paypal.me/willardhatcher
