Ellen Suchman Lipson of Charlotte, NC since 2012 (formerly of Cincinnati,OH), age 65, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, July 18, 2023.
Beloved daughter of the late Herbert Suchman and Edith Sacks Suchman, Ellen was born in Johnstown, PA where she attended grade school and high school. She competed statewide as a High School Majorette. Her highlight was marching in the New Orleans Mardi Gras parade in 1974.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania became her beloved second home during 1975-1979. She attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in four years with a B.A. in Social Work. She had a colorful four years in S.D.T. Sorority, bar-tended on the boat the Gateway Clipper fleet, and worked at the American Red Cross. It was during her junior year that she met Richard D. Lipson of Cincinnati, OH on a double blind date on New Year's Eve, 1977-1978.
She married Richard D. Lipson in Pittsburgh, PA in July 1980. In Cincinnati, OH Ellen worked as a Social Worker re-settling Russian Jews, numerous Business Management positions, including Executive Assistant at Kenner Toy Corp. She left the private sector to raise her daughters Rachel G. Lipson and Debra A. Lipson in the early 1990's.
She was heavily involved in all aspects of her dear children's lives and school careers. Extremely active and supportive in Swim Team parent committees, dance, ballet and all levels of her children's schools. She served on the Executive Board of Isaac M. Wise Temple and Sisterhood. Always the lead organizer of Richard's family during Jewish and secular holidays, birthdays and special occasions. She enjoyed her many friends in Cincinnati, especially from Mahjong and swim team. She learned all aspects of Richard's Independent Furniture Sales Rep business and was a valuable asset and assistant.
Ellen's dream of being closer to her beloved condo in Hilton Head, SC became reality in 2012. She thrived in Charlotte, NC. Dozens of close friends enjoyed her upbeat, uplifting personality, generosity, hospitality, steadfast friendship and wise counsel. Always fashion conscious, she was admired for her great flair for clothing. Ellen served on the Sisterhood Board at Temple Beth El, and belonged to two Mahjong clubs and one book club.
After a diagnosis of breast cancer re-occurrence in 2018, she decided to raise the bar at living a full life. She traveled extensively with her family and friends from all decades of her adult life. Her pet cats, the Pittsburgh Steelers and all Charlotte sports teams kept her daily attention.
Ellen is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 43 years, Richard D. Lipson, and cherished daughters Rachel G. Lipson and Debra A. Lipson, all of Charlotte, NC. She leaves behind many beloved close friends and her four-legged furry companions Izzy and Sophie.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend services at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226. Interment will take place at 9:30 am, prior to the Celebration of Life Service, at Hebrew Cemetery of Charlotte, 1801 Statesville Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28206, Section 5, with Rabbi Asher Knight officiating. Shiva observance with family and friends at Temple Beth El will be held on Sunday 7/23/2023 at 7:00 pm.
Contributions in Ellen's memory may be made to the Rabbi's Discretionary Fund at Temple Beth El, 5101 Providence Road, Charlotte, NC 28226
