John Carl Mattern, 84, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, with his loving wife by his side. He was born on November 14, 1941, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. John lived a life defined by movement, curiosity, and an enduring love of adventure. He studied at the University of Pittsburgh and went on to build a career as a Field Service Engineer with the Honeywell Corporation. John was a natural problem solver who embraced innovation and remained intellectually curious throughout his life. He was often on the cutting edge of emerging technologies, always eager to understand how things worked and what might come next.
John was a proud veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. Later in life, he continued his dedication to service through his involvement with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. John's passions extended far beyond his professional life. He loved anything with wheels – from cars and motorcycles to bicycles- and found joy in motion. An avid motorcyclist, he raced scrambles and dual sport bikes, explored the scenic routes across the United States and Europe, and relished the freedom of the open road and sweeping landscapes. His enthusiasm for activity carried into a wide range of pursuits, including figure skating, speed skating, sailing, car rallying, tai chi, and bicycling. Whether on the ice, on the water, or on a winding mountain road, John loved the activity.
For the past 23 years, John has shared a loving marriage with his wife, Dottie. Together they embraced travel throughout the U.S., Europe, Japan, and New Zealand, experiencing the foods and cultures while enjoying the adventure and the simple joys of discovery. While living in the Florida Keys, they were actively involved in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, teaching safe boating classes and being on the water assisting the Coast Guard training and patrols.
John is survived by his wife, Dottie Mattern; his son, Craig Mattern; daughter-in-law, Rachel Mattern; his grandchildren, Grace and Miles Mattern; his stepson, Chris Bull; his wife, Cindy; their children, Riley, Regan, and Lindsay. He leaves behind a legacy of curiosity, energy, and a life lived actively.
