Ellis Herbert Obituary Ellis Dearl Herbert, 95, of Straughn, IN, passed away in his sleep Jan. 29, 2025 at home.
Ellis was born in Rush County Mar. 6, 1929 one of eleven children of the late Rosie (DeWitt) and John Herbert. He met Florence Fritzsche and they married 2 weeks later on Feb. 23, 1949. Flo passed May 24, 2017. They raised four children and enjoyed over 24,927 days with each other.
Ellis attended Mays High School and helped his dad farm before he joined the Navy in 1948. He was Honorably discharged in 1949. Ellis was one of Indiana's first licensed ARC welders. He also worked at Schnadig for a time and drove a truck delivering caskets for the former Franklin Casket Company in Brookville. He worked through the years doing many things. He and Flo owned and operated Herbert's Wrecker in Spiceland. Ellis drove a truck for R L Coon. In later years he sorted corn at Pioneer for several seasons.
Ellis starting racing dirt tracks in 195, He then moved to stock cars. He was the runner-up for the ASA in 1977. He had many records for heats and features. Ellis was an accomplished, mechanic, and race car driver he had been inducted into the Hall of Fame at El Dora, Mt. Lawn, Winchester, and Anderson speedways.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, K of C 769, American Legion and the Eagles.
Ellis is survived by a daughter, Penny (James) Sons, and a son, Scott A. Herbert, of both of Straughn; a sister, Fern Hodson, of Shelbyville and a brother, Jerry Herbert, of Milroy.
Also missing him are five grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Ellis had enough nieces and nephews to fill a school bus. Lets not forget the many generations of friends he made throughout his life.
Waiting in Heaven are his wife Florence (Flo), daughter, Tena Draper, son, Dearl Herbert; and six brothers and two sisters.
Military Honors will be 1:00 PM on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025 at Todd Funeral Centre & Crematory in Rushville, IN with the Rushville American Legion Honor Guard followed by the Funeral Ceremony officiated by Father Dustin Boehm. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
