Ellis Guy Hudgins, a lifelong resident of Mathews County and born on November 19, 1931, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2025 after complications from a fall in his home. He was predeceased by his parents, 2 brothers, Bee and Mac, his sister Mary Morgan and his wife Mildred Hudgins.
Ellis is survived by his son, Guy Hudgins (Rita), two granddaughters, Rebecca Hudgins and Nicole Lowe, a grandson, Jerry Lowe (Jess) and two great-granddaughters Ryan and Olivia.
Ellis graduated from Mathews High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed overseas during the Korean War. After returning home he found the love of his life in Mildred and they were married in 1957. In 1966 they purchased a plot of land on Queens Creek and built their forever home there.
Ellis spent a lifetime working on the water, first on a fishing boat, then becoming a tankerman and working on oil barges for Interstate Oil Transport Co, later Maritrans. He retired from the company in 1993.
Along with his wife Mildred, Ellis stayed involved in the county, volunteering to help with civic events like Mathews Market Days and Red Cross blood drives. He was also active in the local American Legion post, always working their monthly Sunday breakfasts until just a few years ago.
Fishing, crabbing, and raising his vegetable garden were some of the things Ellis loved most, along with just being out on the water on his boat. Many a friend and neighbor were beneficiaries of his giveaways of fresh vegetables and freshly caught fish, always cleaned and ready to eat.
The family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Vickie Hall and Karen Harvey, devoted caregivers for both Mildred and Ellis for the last 3 and a half years.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster Faulkner Chapel in Mathews, VA.
