Ellis Leon Womack

Ellis Leon Womack departed this life on Friday, January 24, 2025, at the Veterans Medical Center
Hospital in Wilmington, DE. Born on August 6, 1939 in Chester, Pennsylvania, Ellis was one of four
children born to the late Anderson Womack and Mamie Louise Ellis-Womack.
Ellis attended school in Chester, graduating from Chester High School with honors in 1957. He then went
on to attend West Chester University for two years before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1959. During his
service, Ellis served two four-year tours as a battlefield medic during the Vietnam War, providing critical
medical care to his fellow service members, earning the rank of Staff Sergeant before being honorably
discharged.
Before leaving for the military, Ellis married Thais Hubert in holy matrimony in 1959. Their union was
blessed with four beautiful children. After his military service, Ellis remained steadfast in his commitment
to his family. Upon returning from service, he resumed his studies in chemistry at West Chester
University, balancing a full-time job at night with his education during the day. His hard work and
perseverance led him to a successful career as a chemist, contributing his expertise to companies such
as Congoleum, Brighton Chemical, and DuPont until his well-earned retirement.
Ellis was a loving husband, father, provider, grandfather, and friend. He was a man of intellect and quiet
strength, deeply valuing education and ensuring that all four of his children earned college degrees. He
led by example, instilling in his family the importance of hard work, discipline, and lifelong learning.
Beyond his professional and family life, Ellis had a variety of interests that brought him joy. He was an
avid chess player, a skilled bowler, and a devoted reader of suspense novels. He also loved watching
sports and was known for his legendary channel-flipping skills with the remote. Later in life, he found
great fulfillment as a member of St. Daniels United Methodist Church, where he volunteered and served
his community until he was no longer able.
Ellis leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years, Thais Womack, and the memory of his eldest son, David
Womack (deceased). He is survived by his son Damon Womack, daughters Kim Womack and Ellen
Imani, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Tracy Brown-Womack and
Elizabeth Henning, and son-in-law Kenneth Imani. He is also survived by his loving brothers, Walter
Womack, and William Womack; his cherished sisters-in-law, Janet Cox, Alice 'Dolly' Womack, and Shirley
Womack; and the memory of his beloved sister, Mamie Arnita Davis (deceased). His legacy lives on
through many devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who held him dear. He will be deeply
missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
