Elmer Rayvaughn Byrd, age 83, of Elkin, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Wilkes County on March 9, 1942, he was the son of Elmer and Pauline Byrd.
Mr. Byrd retired from Sprint and was one of the members of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church since it began. He enjoyed hunting in his earlier years, had an appreciation for vintage automobiles, and valued spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Virginia Call Byrd, and his brother Dwayne Byrd.
He is survived by his three children: Jennifer King (and husband T.P.) of State Road; Jeff Byrd (and fiancée Heather Combs) of Reidsville; and Julie Simpson (and husband Rev. Matthew) of State Road. He is also survived by his brother Dr. Gary Byrd (and wife Carolyn) of Elkin; sisters Sybil Caudill (and husband Teddy) of State Road, and Brenda Pack of Elkin; grandchildren Nichole Meyerhoffer (and husband Justin), Hayley Stamper (and husband Jordan), Austin Luffman (and wife Brittany), Ryan Simpson, Riley Long (and husband Braxton), and Aiden Byrd; step-grandchildren Allison Gorman (and husband Greg) and Paula Hudson; fourteen great-grandchildren as well as several devoted nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Matthew Simpson. Mr. Byrd will lie in state at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., preceding the graveside service.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, as well as the private caregivers, for their unwavering love and support.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 700 Johnson Ridge Road, Elkin, NC 28621.
