Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cumberland Valley Funeral Home from Jul. 19 to Jul. 20, 2025.
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, our community lost one of its finest souls. Elmer David Hurt, age 54, left this world suddenly at the Harlan Appalachian Regional Hospital in Harlan, Kentucky, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, unwavering devotion, and boundless love. Born November 14, 1970, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, Elmer's story is one marked by grit, generosity, and a heart as boundless as the night skies he so lovingly studied.
Elmer was the cherished son of Ershel "Puncho" Hurt of Blackey, Kentucky, and the late Wilma Dale Shepherd Hurt. His early years were shaped by the love and wisdom of his family, including his late brother, Tim Hurt, maternal grandparents Elmer and Laura Shepherd Gilliam, and paternal grandparents Ershel and Mildred Lewis Hurt, all of whom now welcome him into eternal rest.
He made his home in Harlan County since the age of 18, where he carved a life defined by hard work and committed dedication. Elmer devoted over two decades of his life to the coal mines of Kentucky, serving as a foreman, electrician, and mechanic with Copper Glow Mining in Cumberland. Just as he was preparing to step into retirement, a well-earned rest after so many years underground, fate intervened, and he was called home.
Elmer's commitment to his profession was matched only by his loyalty to his loved ones. He was a man who wore many hats, provider, mentor, and protector. He held an Associates of Science Degree, always eager to expand his skills and knowledge, and was deeply respected by his colleagues for his expertise and integrity.
Beyond his work, Elmer was a man of simple joys and deep passions. He was a firm believer in the Freewill Baptist Faith. His heart belonged wholly to his family, whom he would do anything to support. For 37 beautiful years, he was the devoted husband of Rose Mary Walker Hurt, a true partnership, marked by unwavering love and deep friendship. As a father, he was fun, loving, gentle and strong, guiding his children with patience and pride. His son, David Shane Hurt, and Cody Wagoner, whom Elmer loved as his own, carry forward his wisdom; his daughter, Brandy Kaye Hurt of Pineville, Kentucky, will always hold his memory close to her heart.
Elmer's generosity extended beyond immediate family. He was a beloved brother to Shannon Hurt of Hazard, Kentucky, and George Hurt of Blackey, Kentucky. His nephews, Lee and Cody Cress, and special family friend, Sue Shepherd, counted themselves fortunate to be loved by someone as remarkable as Elmer. Even his loyal dog, "Boy," will miss the warmth of Elmer's gentle hand and kind voice.
A man of many interests, Elmer loved to immerse himself in the worlds of his favorite TV show, "Game of Thrones," and the adventures of Final Fantasy 12. His fascination with astrology and the mysteries of the night sky reflected his endless curiosity and sense of wonder. Whether he was fishing, sharing stories, offering a helping hand, or simply sitting beneath a canopy of stars, Elmer brought joy and comfort to those around him.
Elmer's heart of gold, his unshakeable work ethic, and his boundless capacity for love leave a permanent mark on all who knew him. His memory will be cherished always by family, friends, and the community whose lives he touched.
Family and friends are invited to honor Elmer's life at a viewing and visitation on Monday, July 21, 2025, from 12 pm to 2 pm at Cumberland Valley Funeral Home, 113 Main Street,
Cumberland, Kentucky.
As we mourn his passing, we celebrate the life of a truly special man, a loving husband, devoted father, steadfast friend, and treasured son. May we all look to the stars Elmer so loved and find comfort in the knowledge that his light shines on, ever bright, in the hearts of those who loved him.
